Clara: "Mark, please explain. My dad... he told me before he went into the hospital that everything was taken care of."
Mark: "It was, sweetheart. He made sure you were protected, but Evelyn hid the documents before probate could review them."
Evelyn: "That is slander! Arthur was confused at the end! He didn't know what he was signing!"
Mark: "He was completely clear-headed when he met with his personal estate attorney in downtown Dallas."
Mark reached down and opened the Manila envelope, sliding out a stack of crisp white paper bearing an official court seal.
Mark: "This is the primary testamentary trust created by Arthur Vance. Clause four explicitly states that the mansion, the surrounding land, and the primary investment accounts pass directly to Clara upon her twenty-fifth birthday."
Clara: "My twenty-fifth birthday was last month..."
Mark: "Exactly. Which means as of thirty days ago, Clara is the sole owner of this entire estate."
Evelyn's face drained of all color, her hands shaking as she reached out to touch the back of a dining chair for support.
Evelyn: "No... no, that is impossible! He left everything to me! I was his wife!"
Mark: "You were his wife under a strict prenuptial agreement, Evelyn. An agreement that limited your payout to a fixed lump sum if the marriage ended or upon his death."
Clara: "She told me there was no prenup. She told me dad died without leaving a single dollar for my college fund or my future."
Mark: "She lied to keep you dependent on her. She used your father's business accounts to pay off her own personal debts for five full years."
Evelyn: "You have no right to look through my private banking files!"
Mark: "When you applied for a third mortgage on this house last week, the bank flagged the title because Clara's name was listed as the primary beneficiary."
Evelyn backed away slowly, waving her hands in a frantic attempt to dismiss the growing whispers of her family members.
Evelyn: "It's a mistake! The bank made a mistake! I built this life! I managed this family!"
Clara: "You didn't manage anything, Evelyn. You spent five years making me feel like a charity case in my own childhood home."
Mark: "And that isn't even the worst part of what she did, Clara."
