The air in the bedroom grew ice cold. Vanessa stepped forward, extending her arms to touch Mark’s chest, trying to put on her usual manipulative smile. But Mark didn't flinch. He stood like an iron wall between his daughter and the woman he was supposed to marry in three days.
Vanessa: Mark, think about the press! Think about the Sterling Estate, your father's reputation, and the board members coming from New York!
Mark: I don't care about the board members.
Vanessa: We spent two million dollars on the Dallas Country Club reservation! The flowers alone cost eighty thousand!
Mark: Do you really think money matters to me right now?
Vanessa: You can't cancel a wedding of this size over a stupid haircut! People will talk! My family will be disgraced!
Mark slowly raised his left hand. The five-carat diamond engagement ring that had cost him a fortune sparkled under the chandelier lights, but to him, it looked like a iron shackle.
Mark: The wedding is over.
Vanessa: What? No! You can't do that!
Mark: The wedding is over. Get out of my sight.
Mark gripped the ring with his right hand and pulled it off his finger with force. He didn't gently hand it back. He threw the heavy ring straight at the vanity mirror. The diamond slammed into the glass, cracking it right down the middle, before bouncing off the table and hitting Vanessa’s expensive designer shoes.
Vanessa: You threw a three-hundred-thousand-dollar ring at me?! Are you insane?!
Mark: I should have seen what you were months ago. You never loved my daughter. You just loved my trust fund and my last name.
Vanessa: I gave up two years of my life for you! I raised your child when you were stuck in corporate meetings!
Maria: You never raised her! You left her with me every single night while you went out drinking with your friends!
Vanessa: Shut your mouth, Maria!
Mark: Don't you ever yell at Maria again. She has been more of a mother to Lily than you could ever pretend to be.
Vanessa: Fine! Cancel the wedding! But you still owe me! The prenup states that if the engagement breaks within thirty days of the ceremony, I get a five-million-dollar cash settlement!
Mark: You really haven't read the legal fine print, have you?
