The polished mahogany dining table in the Dallas mansion glittered under the heavy crystal chandelier, but the air inside the room was ice cold. Dinner had just been served, yet no one was eating. Richard sat at the head of the table, his eyes fixed on his wife, Victoria. Beside her sat his two children from his first marriage, eight-year-old Leo and two-year-old Toby, who was squirming in his high chair, whimpering softly.
Toby: Hungry, Mommy... hungry! Bread please!
Victoria: Be quiet, Toby. Grown-ups are trying to have a civilized conversation.
Leo: Step-mom Victoria, he hasn't eaten since lunch. Can I please pass him the rolls?
Victoria: Sit down, Leo! Don't you dare touch that basket. He needs to learn discipline.
Richard watched in disbelief as Victoria slowly picked up a fresh, warm piece of bread from the silver basket. Instead of passing it to the toddler, she looked Toby dead in the eye, her lips curling into a cruel smile, and tossed the roll onto the rug.
Victoria: You want it so badly? Fetch it off the floor like the little pest you are.
Toby began to sob uncontrollably, his tiny hands clutching the edge of his high chair. Before Richard could even process the cold cruelty unfolding in front of him, the dining room doors swung open, and footsteps echoed loudly across the marble foyer.
Richard: Victoria, what in the world are you doing to my son?!
Victoria: Teaching him manners, Richard! Someone has to raise them right while you're at the office!
Richard: You just threw food on the floor for a two-year-old baby!
Victoria: He's spoiled rotten, just like his mother was! If he wants to eat, he eats off the floor!
Richard’s blood ran cold. He took three large strides toward the table, his face red with fury. But what Victoria didn't know was that Richard wasn't the only one standing in the doorway—and the secret she had been hiding for six months was about to shatter her life completely.
