Justice Served Cold

The Stepmother Dropped Bread on the Floor for His Son

Victoria: You'll regret this, Richard! You hear me?! You're nothing without me! You're just a broken widower who couldn't keep his wife alive!

Officer Miller: That's enough out of you. Turn around and put your hands behind your back.

Victoria: Don't touch my clothes! This dress costs five thousand dollars!

Officer Miller: It won't cost anything where you're going. Move.

The officers snapped the handcuffs around Victoria's wrists. She thrashed and screamed, her hair falling out of its neat bun as they marched her out of the dining room, through the grand foyer, and down the front steps toward the waiting police cruiser with flashing blue and red lights.

Toby: Lady gone, Daddy?

Richard: Yes, buddy. She's gone. She's never coming back.

Leo: Is she going to prison, Dad?

Richard: Yes, son. She's going away for a very long time for what she did to our family.

Arthur closed his briefcase with a sharp click and handed a manila folder to Richard.

Arthur: Here are the emergency restraining orders and the freeze commands for all joint banking accounts. Every dollar she transferred has been flagged by the federal authorities. We will recover at least ninety percent of the stolen trust funds within thirty days.

Richard: Thank you, Arthur. I don't know how I can ever repay you for finding out the truth about her past.

Arthur: You paid me to protect your family's estate, Richard. But as a friend, I'm just glad those boys are safe now. She was a dangerous woman.

Richard: I was so blind... I thought I was giving my boys a mother figure. I was so wrapped up in work and grief that I didn't see the venom right under my roof.

Arthur: Predators know how to target good men when they are down. Don't blame yourself. What matters now is how you rebuild.

Richard: You're right. First thing tomorrow, I'm taking a leave of absence from the firm. My boys need their father 100% focused on them.

Leo: Dad? Can we eat now? I'm really hungry...

Richard: Of course, Leo. Come here, both of you.

Richard knelt down and wrapped both his sons in a tight, warm hug. He kissed the top of Toby's head, wiping away the remaining tears on the toddler's cheeks.

Richard: We're not eating in this formal dining room tonight. How about we go to the kitchen, fire up the oven, and make fresh hot pizza together from scratch?

Toby: Pizza! With extra cheese, Daddy!

Leo: Can I help knead the dough?

Richard: You can make the biggest pizza you want, Leo. Anything you boys desire.

As Richard walked toward the kitchen with his sons, the dark cloud that had hovered over the house for months finally lifted. But the story was far from over. Outside in the driveway, Victoria was sitting in the back of the police car, furiously screaming at the officer in the front seat—unaware that another surprise witness was about to arrive at the station.
