Victoria: You are making a massive mistake! I have a high-powered divorce lawyer in Houston who will sue this entire department!
Officer Miller: Save it for the judge, lady. Your lawyer in Houston just dropped you as a client twenty minutes ago after reviewing your bank transfer records.
Victoria: What?! He can't do that!
Officer Miller: He can when federal wire fraud is involved. You're facing state and federal charges.
The police car pulled into the booking garage of the Dallas County Courthouse. Victoria was escorted through the heavy steel doors into the processing room, where a woman in a formal business suit sat waiting at a wooden table.
Victoria: Who are you? Another detective here to harass me?
Brenda: My name is Brenda Vance. I am Sarah's sister, and the primary trustee of the children's inheritance fund.
Victoria froze. Sarah's sister had spent years living in London, managing international investments. Victoria had never met her in person.
Victoria: You... you're Sarah's sister?
Brenda: That's right. And I came straight from the airport to make sure you understand exactly what is happening to you today.
Victoria: I don't have to talk to you! I want my phone call!
Brenda: You'll get your phone call. But first, look at these documents.
Brenda slid a thick stack of financial audits across the metal table. Victoria glanced down at the top page, her eyes widening as she recognized her own handwriting on several fraudulent wire slips.
Brenda: You thought you were so clever, didn't you? Siphoning money into offshore accounts, thinking Sarah's family was too distracted by grief to notice. But my sister was a brilliant financial auditor before she passed, and she built fail-safes into her trust that automatically flag unauthorized transfers over ten thousand dollars.
Victoria: I... I was going to pay it back! It was a temporary loan!
Brenda: A loan? You spent eighty thousand dollars on designer jewelry in Miami last month! You bought a sports car using a debit card linked directly to Toby's medical trust account!
Victoria: Richard gave me permission to use those accounts!
Brenda: Richard didn't have the legal authority to grant that permission, because the trust is managed solely by my firm. Every dime you took constitutes federal bank fraud.
Victoria: Please... Brenda, listen to me. I'm sorry! I'll give everything back! I'll sell the car, the jewelry, everything!
Brenda: It's too late for apologies, Victoria. The authorities have seized all your assets, including the hidden accounts in the Cayman Islands you thought nobody knew about.
Victoria: You found those too?!
Brenda: We found everything. You are going to spend the next fifteen to twenty years in a federal penitentiary. You will never set foot in Dallas again. And most importantly, you will never see those two innocent boys ever again.
