The Maid's Hidden Identity

The Stepmother Dropped the Baby in the Pool, But a Secret Came Out

Vanessa stood near the open balcony doors, clutching a heavy leather briefcase crammed with stolen jewelry and stacks of cash from the wall safe.

Two armed police officers rushed up the stairs behind Mark, their handguns raised and flashlights cutting through the dim room.

Police Officer: Drop the briefcase and put your hands behind your head! Do it now!

Vanessa: Get out of my way! You have no idea who I am!

Mark: Drop the bag, Vanessa. It’s over.

Vanessa’s hands shook as she slowly let the leather handle slip from her fingers. It hit the carpeted floor with a heavy thud, spilling diamond necklaces and gold watches across the floorboards.

The officers moved in fast, grabbing her wrists and clicking metal handcuffs tightly around her joints.

Vanessa: Mark, tell them to stop! You’re going to regret this! My family will sue you for everything you own!

Mark: Your family won't have a single dollar left after my lawyers finish with your fake trust fund clauses.

Downstairs, Arthur, the family attorney, was standing in the foyer holding a thick blue folder full of signed documents as the officers led Vanessa down the staircase in restraints.

Arthur: Mark, are you and the child uninjured?

Mark: Lily is fine, thanks to Maria. Arthur, look at these documents Maria retrieved from the pool.

Arthur pulled out a pair of reading glasses and scanned the soaked pages with a sharp, analytical eye.

Arthur: Good heavens... this is a fraudulent life insurance policy drafted through an unauthorized broker in Miami. This carries severe federal fraud charges.

Maria: Check the signature on page two, Mr. Arthur. That’s my late sister Clara’s forged signature, dated six months after her death.

Arthur gasped, looking up from the paper toward Maria with deep astonishment.

Arthur: You... you are Elena Clara’s younger sister, aren't you? The elementary school teacher from Illinois?

Maria: Yes, Arthur. My full name is Maria Elena Vance. Clara called you the week before she passed away to change her power of attorney.

Mark: Wait, Clara spoke to you about this before she died?

Arthur: She did, Mark. But when Clara tragically passed away shortly after, we could never locate Maria to execute the secondary guardianship clause.

Maria: Because Vanessa’s associates paid off my former apartment landlord to intercept my mail and tell anyone who asked that I had moved out of the country.

Mark: They tried to isolate you so nobody could contest Vanessa’s claim to the estate?

Maria: Exactly. So I changed my name slightly, hired a private investigator to track down where you lived, and applied for the open housekeeper position under my maiden name.
