The summer heat hung heavy over the suburban neighborhood, but inside my chest, everything went cold as I pulled my car onto the quiet suburban street. Through the windshield, I saw my three-year-old daughter, Lily, standing on the pavement in front of our house, her small body shaking violently as tears streamed down her red, dusty cheeks.
David: What on earth is happening out there?
My new wife, Brenda, was standing over her, her face twisted in rage as she towered over the sobbing toddler.
Brenda: Stop throwing your stupid tantrum right now, Lily! I am sick of your crying!
Lily: Daddy! I want my daddy!
Before I could even unbuckle my seatbelt, Brenda reached down and aggressively slapped Lily’s open palm, the harsh impact echoing across the empty pavement.
Brenda: I said be quiet!
Lily let out a sharp, heartbreaking gasp, clutching her tiny wrist as fresh tears spilled over her eyelashes.
David: Hey! Stop right now!
I kicked my car door open and slammed it shut, my blood running cold as I charged across the grass toward the driveway.
Brenda: David, wait, she was being completely disobedient—
David: Get away from my daughter!
Without thinking, driven by pure instinct and furious rage, I shoved Brenda hard, sending her stumbling backward against the fence.
Brenda: Are you insane? You can't put your hands on me!
David: Don't you ever lay a finger on her again!
I instantly dropped to my knees on the hot concrete and scooped Lily into my arms, pulling her tightly against my chest.
David: I've got you, baby. I've got you. You're safe now, I promise.
Lily buried her face into the crook of my neck, her small shoulders heavy with deep, uncontrollable sob beats. But as I held my daughter, my eyes caught a glimpse of her small wrist, where red marks and dark purple bruises were already starting to form under her skin—bruises that couldn't have come from a single slap today.
