I turned around abruptly, pulling Lily tightly behind my back as Brenda rounded the kitchen corner, a heavy brass patio statue clutched in her right hand.
Brenda: Give me that briefcase, David!
David: You broke the glass sliding door? You've completely lost your mind!
Brenda: You went into my personal closet! You had no right to look inside that box!
David: You forged my signature to steal my late wife's money from our daughter's trust!
Brenda: That money was meant for our family! I deserved a comfortable life for dealing with your baggage!
David: My daughter is not baggage! She is a child, and you laid hands on her!
Brenda: She's a spoiled brat who reminded me every single day that you loved Sarah more than me!
David: Because Sarah was a loving mother! You are nothing but a monster!
Brenda stepped forward, raising the heavy brass statue into the air with a wild look in her eyes.
Brenda: Give me that briefcase or I swear to God I will take what I'm owed by force!
David: Don't do something that lands you in prison for the rest of your life, Brenda!
Lily: Daddy, I'm scared!
David: Close your eyes, Lily! Hold onto Daddy's neck!
Brenda lunged forward, swinging the brass statue down toward my arm. I pivoted quickly, taking the impact against my left shoulder, the dull pain shooting down my spine as I stumbled back into the counter.
David: Get off me!
I swung my free right arm, knocking the statue loose from her grip. It crashed onto the hardwood floor with a deafening thud, rolling away into the hallway.
Brenda: You think you can ruin my life? I spent two years planning this!
David: Planning to rob a motherless child?
Brenda: She didn't earn that money! Sarah's family had millions, and you think a three-year-old deserves all of it while I live on an allowance?
David: It was Sarah's life insurance and her family's inheritance! It belonged to Lily!
Suddenly, red and blue lights flashed through the living room windows, accompanied by the sharp sound of police sirens wailing down the neighborhood lane.
Brenda: You called the police...?
David: No, Arthur called them the second I told him what you did.
Brenda: You bastard!
Brenda turned toward the back door, trying to make a run for the patio, but two police officers barged through the broken frame with flashlights and drawn weapons.
Police Officer: Hands up! Step away from the kitchen counter immediately!
