The Stepmother's Secret Push on the Oak Balcony

The pristine silence of the oak-paneled foyer shattered with the sickening crack of a body striking hard floor. Seven-year-old Lily lay curled in a trembling heap at the base of the grand staircase, her painful cries echoing off the white crown molding. Up on the second-floor balcony, her stepmother, Evelyn, pulled her hands back toward her silk dress, her face pale but her eyes oddly cold.

Evelyn: Oh my god! Lily!

The heavy front doors flew open, slamming against the drywall as Arthur rushed into the house, clutching his leather briefcase. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes wide with horror as he spotted his daughter sobbing on the floor.

Arthur: Lily! Sweetheart!

Arthur dropped his briefcase, the leather sliding across the polished floor, and sprinted toward his daughter. He dropped heavily to his knees, his hands trembling as he gently scooped the small, shuddering girl into his arms.

Arthur: Daddy’s here. You’re safe, I’ve got you. Where does it hurt?

Lily: Daddy... my arm... she pushed me, Daddy...

Evelyn hurried down the stairs, her heels clicking rapidly against the steps, her voice pitched high with frantic distress.

Evelyn: Arthur, it was an accident! She was leaning over the railing, trying to look for you! I tried to grab her dress, but she slipped right out of my hands!

Arthur’s grip on his daughter tightened. He stood up slowly, setting Lily gently behind him on the floor. He turned to face his wife, his eyes locking onto hers with a sudden, icy precision that made her step back.

Arthur: You expect me to believe she fell over a four-foot banister by herself?

Evelyn: Arthur, please, you know how clumsy she gets! I would never hurt your daughter!

Arthur: Don't you dare lie to me!

The slap echoed like a gunshot through the high-ceilinged room. Evelyn’s head snapped to the side, her hand flying to her stinging cheek as she stumbled back against the white banister. Arthur stood tall over his daughter, his chest heaving, while the truth behind Evelyn's pristine facade began to break apart.
