At two o'clock in the morning, Arthur stepped back inside his residence, accompanied by Marcus and Detective Miller. The house was quiet, lit only by the soft ambient lights under the kitchen cabinets. Evelyn emerged from the master suite wearing a silk robe, her face holding a look of calculated annoyance.
Evelyn: Arthur? Why are you bringing police officers into our home at two in the morning? How is Lily?
Arthur: Lily has a broken wrist, severe bruises, and trauma that will take years to heal. Don't act like you care.
Evelyn: I am her stepmother, Arthur! I have spent every minute since you left praying that she would be okay! How dare you treat me like a criminal in my own home!
Detective Miller: Mrs. Vance, we are here to retrieve digital recording devices linked to the home's primary security network as part of our ongoing investigation.
Evelyn’s composure flickered for a fraction of a second, her gaze darting toward the hallway closet before returning to the detective.
Evelyn: Digital recordings? We don't have cameras in this house. We disabled all of them months ago because Arthur agreed they were an invasion of our personal privacy.
Arthur: We disabled the visible wall units, Evelyn. You didn't know about the secondary safety system built into the antique mantle clock.
Evelyn: What... what are you talking about?
Arthur walked past her to the grand fireplace mantle, reaching behind the heavy oak casing of the traditional clock. He pulled out a small, high-definition camera lens connected to an integrated storage unit, holding it up in the bright light of the room.
Arthur: Encrypted local storage, mirrored automatically to an offshore cloud server every six hours.
Evelyn: That’s illegal! You recorded me without my consent in my own private residence!
Marcus: In the state of Illinois, common areas of a shared marital home like a foyer are fully permissible for security surveillance, Mrs. Vance—especially when child safety is involved.
Detective Miller: Mr. Vance, pull up the video feed from 4:30 PM today on your mobile device, please.
Arthur opened the security application on his phone, his hands steady as he navigated through the timestamp logs. He selected the file from earlier that afternoon and set the phone flat on the dining table for everyone to see.
Evelyn: Arthur, stop this insanity right now! You are destroying our marriage over a misunderstanding!
Arthur: Watch the screen, Evelyn.
The high-definition footage showed the empty foyer at 4:28 PM. Seconds later, Evelyn appeared on the second-floor balcony, holding a silver picture frame. Little Lily stood near her, reaching up toward her with small hands.
Video Footage (Lily's Voice): Please give it back! That’s my mommy’s picture!
Video Footage (Evelyn's Voice): You don't need this trash anymore, you little brat! Your father belongs to me now!
On the screen, Evelyn deliberately threw the picture frame over the edge, sending it crashing down onto the hardwood floor below. As Lily reached out over the railing in distress, Evelyn placed both hands firmly on the child’s shoulder blades and shoved her forward with full force.
