Sarah stood up slowly, her face red with embarrassment and fear. She walked toward the front hallway closet, her heels clicking against the hardwood floor. Mark sat at the table, taking deep breaths, while Liam happily chewed on a piece of soft pizza crust, totally unaware of the storm brewing in his home.
Liam: Daddy eat pizza now?
Mark: Daddy lost his appetite, buddy.
Liam: Pizza good!
Mark: I know it's good, kiddo. Just wait a second.
Sarah returned to the dining room holding a thick Manila envelope sealed with a red wax stamp—the classic mark of Crawford & Associates Law Office.
Sarah: Here it is. I haven't even opened the second document inside.
Mark: Second document? You mean there are two?
Sarah: The top one was the trust fund paper for Liam. The second one was sealed separately for you.
Mark snatched the envelope from Sarah's hands and tore through the top edge without hesitation. He pulled out the heavy parchment paper, scanning the bold text at the top of the first page.
Mark: "Irrevocable Trust Agreement for Liam Crawford." Sounds innocent enough, right?
Sarah: Isn't it? She wants to put two million dollars in a high-yield account for his college education.
Mark: Look at Clause 14, Sarah. Read it out loud.
Sarah: Clause 14? Let me see...
Sarah leaned over Mark's shoulder, scanning the fine print near the bottom of page three. Her eyes widened as she read the legal language.
Sarah: "The trustee, Eleanor Crawford, retains full legal guardianship authority regarding educational, medical, and residential choices for the beneficiary until age twenty-one..."
Mark: Do you realize what this means?!
Sarah: She... she would have authority over where he goes to school?
Mark: Not just school! Medical choices! Boarding schools! She could take him out of our custody and move him to a private academy in Europe if she decided we weren't raising him up to "Crawford standards"!
Sarah: Oh my god... I didn't read the fine print. She told me it was just a standard college savings account!
Mark: That's how she operates, Sarah! She hides golden handcuffs in every legal document she writes!
Sarah: What about the second paper, Mark? The one addressed to you?
Mark ripped open the smaller white envelope. Inside was a single page printed on official court letterhead, signed by his mother's personal divorce lawyer.
Mark: Unbelievable. She didn't come here to reconcile with us at all.
Sarah: What is it, Mark? Tell me!
Mark: It's a notice of intent to file for grandparental visitation rights in court next month!
