The horrifying sound of a falling body ripped through the vast marble entryway of the Connecticut estate like an explosion.
Elena hit the cold stone floor violently on both knees, her elbows scraping raw against the tiles as she threw her entire body over the bundle of white cashmere.
Elena: I’ve got him! Oh sweet God, I’ve got him! Please breathe, little one, please breathe!
Her voice cracked with sheer terror as she pulled the trembling three-month-old infant flush against her chest, her whole frame shaking violently.
High above on the grand second-floor balcony, twenty feet above the hardwood floor, Victoria gripped the polished mahogany banister, her manicured fingers gleaming white under the crystal chandelier.
Victoria: David! Come out here right now! She dropped him! That careless monster dropped our baby over the ledge!
Her piercing scream tore through the silence of the estate, and within seconds, heavy, frantic footsteps sprinted out from the private study down the hall.
David rushed into the foyer, his tailored jacket flapping open, his face pale with sudden horror as his eyes locked onto the scene below.
David: What did you say?! What happened to Liam?!
Victoria: She was holding him near the stairs, David! I begged her to step back, and she just opened her arms and let him slip right over the rail!
Elena: No! Mr. Vance, please listen to me! I swear on my life that is not what happened!
Elena lifted her tear-streaked face from the floor, shaking uncontrollably as a sharp burning pain tore through her bruised knees.
David: Step away from my son, Elena! Get your hands off him right now!
David dropped down, aggressively tearing the crying baby away from her trembling chest with frantic, terrified hands.
Elena: He isn't hurt, sir! I caught him before he hit the ground! I was polishing the baseboards downstairs when I saw him falling through the air!
Victoria: Look at her lying through her teeth, David! She’s an absolute monster!
Victoria hurried down the sweeping marble staircase, dabbing carefully at dry cheeks with a silk handkerchief.
Victoria: She was furious because you signed the updated family trust fund papers yesterday! She wanted to destroy our lives!
David: You tried to kill my newborn heir, Elena? After everything this family gave you over the years?
Elena: Never! I loved your late wife Sarah, and I love your children! I would give my life before hurting this baby!
Victoria: Don't let her speak Sarah's name! Call Chief Miller right now and have her locked up for attempted murder!
David pulled out his phone, his hand shaking with blinding fury as his thumb hovered over the emergency dial pad, completely unaware of the shadow running down the upstairs hallway.
