The Yellow Rose She Crushed

The bright Dallas sun poured through the sheer curtains of the living room, casting a warm light over the plush ivory carpet. Three-year-old Lily giggled softly, her tiny fingers clutching the stem of a brightly colored yellow rose. She smoothed down her fresh white dress and walked toward the couch where her stepmother, Brenda, sat scrolling through her phone.

Lily: Look, Mommy! Pretty flower for you!

Brenda glanced down, her eyes narrowing into cold contempt as she looked at the innocent toddler standing before her. She didn't see a sweet child offering a gift; she saw a constant reminder of the woman who had come before her, a living obstacle to the full fortune and estate she planned to claim.

Brenda: Get that filthy thing away from me, you brat.

Lily: But Mommy, it's yellow! Like the sun!

Before the toddler could take another step, Brenda snatched the flower, crushed it in her fist, and swung her hand back. A sharp, violent crack echoed through the house as her palm struck Lily’s soft cheek. The little girl was launched sideways, her tiny body tumbling onto the carpet in utter shock and pain.

Lily: Mommy... why?

Brenda: Shut up! Don't you dare cry!

Lily clutched her burning red face, tears spilling down her pale cheeks as she let out a piercing scream. Down the hallway, heavy footsteps suddenly thundered against the hardwood floor. The heavy doors to the study burst open, and two men rushed into the room, their faces twisted in sheer horror as they took in the terrible scene unfolding before them.
