The metallic click of handcuffs echoes sharply through the quiet, luxurious study. Victoria struggled against Officer Davis's grip, her polished persona completely crumbling as tears of rage smeared her expensive makeup.
Victoria: Let go of me! This is a mistake! Richard, you can't let them take me away like a criminal!
Richard: You are a criminal! You tried to murder a two-year-old child in cold blood! I was a fool to ever let you near my family!
Victoria: I built this life with you! You owe me!
Sarah: The only thing he owes you is a long prison sentence. Get her out of my sight, Officer.
Officer Davis: You're being charged with attempted second-degree murder and felony child endangerment, Mrs. Miller. You have the right to remain silent.
The second officer led the screaming stepmother down the long marble hallway toward the front entrance. Outside, neighbors gathered along the manicured street as Victoria was loaded into the back of the police cruiser, her high heels catching on the gravel as she fought the officers every step of the way.
Inside the house, Richard sat down heavily on the edge of the mahogany desk, his face buried in his hands. Sarah walked over, holding Lily close against her shoulder as the toddler sucked her thumb, finally calm in her mother's arms.
Richard: Sarah... I don't even know what to say. I almost lost my daughter today because I was too blind to see what Victoria really was.
Sarah: You were blind because you cared more about status than your own family, Richard. But that stops today.
Richard: Whatever you want... the full custody agreement, the house, the estate funds for Lily's future... I'll sign it all. I won't fight you on anything.
Sarah: You're going to sign sole physical and legal custody over to me tomorrow morning. And Elena is coming with us.
Elena: Mrs. Sarah, are you sure?
Sarah: You saved my daughter's life today, Elena. You're never going to have to work for people like this ever again. You have a job with me for as long as you want one.
Elena: Thank you, Sarah... thank you so much.
Richard: She's right. Elena, I'll write you a personal check for fifty thousand dollars today as a reward for your bravery. You saved my girl.
Sarah looked at her ex-husband one last time, feeling no hatred left, only the cold quiet satisfaction of justice. She adjusted the warm towel around tiny Lily, took Elena by the hand, and walked out the front doors of the mansion into the bright Texas afternoon sun, leaving the luxury estate and its dark secrets behind forever.
