The Breaking Point

Wealthy CEO Forcing Children to Study Realizes His Mistake

The following evening, a severe stormy wind battered the exterior of the Sterling mansion, causing the glass windows to rattle loudly. Inside the dining room, the atmosphere was thick with anxiety as the six children sat before another round of late-night study drills. The clock on the mantle chimed ten times, but no one was allowed to leave the table until their assignments were complete.

Richard stood at the head of the long table, arms crossed tightly over his chest as he monitored their progress.

Richard: Ten more pages of business economics before anyone goes upstairs.

Younger Son: Dad, my eyes hurt and I am really tired tonight.

Richard: Fatigue is a mental weakness you must learn to overcome quickly.

Suddenly, Marcus slammed his textbook shut with a loud, echoing crash that reverberated through the hall.

Marcus: Enough! He is ten years old, Dad! Let him go to sleep!

Richard: Sit down immediately and open your book back up, Marcus!

Marcus: No! I am not doing this anymore, and neither are they!

Marcus stood up, his body trembling violently with intense emotional pressure that had built up over many years.

Richard: You will obey my rules in this house without question!

Marcus: Or what? You'll cut off our trust funds? We don't care!

From upstairs, a sudden sound of shattering glass echoed through the high ceilings. Eleanor appeared at the top of the grand staircase, her hair disheveled and her face pale as a sheet. She clutched a framed family photo from years ago, her body shaking uncontrollably.

Eleanor: Make it stop! Please, just make the constant noise stop!

Richard: Eleanor, stay where you are! I am handling this right now!

Eleanor: You are destroying them, Richard! Just like you destroyed my mind!

She sank down onto the top step, sobbing uncontrollably into her hands as the memory of her long battle with mental exhaustion overwhelmed her completely. The younger children began to cry, clinging to each other around the study table while the storm raged outside.

Marcus looked from his weeping mother on the stairs to his terrified younger siblings, his eyes filled with pure anguish.

Marcus: Look at what you've done to us! Look at our home!

Richard: I did everything for this family! I built all of this!

Marcus: You built a golden cage, and it's killing every one of us!

Marcus buried his head in his trembling hands, collapsing onto the table as heavy, uncontrolled tears streamed down his flushed cheeks. His breathing came in ragged, desperate gasps, mirroring the exact panic and breakdown his mother had suffered years prior.

Richard stepped forward, his heart pounding rapidly against his ribs. For the first time in his life, he saw the terrifying truth clearly before him: his eldest son was breaking down completely under the impossible weight of his cold demands.

Richard: Marcus... stand up, son. Please, look at me.

Marcus: I can't do this anymore, Dad... I just can't do it.

The boy’s voice cracked into a soft, helpless whisper that cut through Richard's stern demeanor far deeper than any harsh argument ever could.
