A Faint Heartbeat

A Boy Stopped His Father's Burial With Three Words

David: HE'S BREATHING! HE HAS SWEAT ON HIS FACE!

Security Officer: Move back! Let me check the carotid artery!

The officer pressed two fingers firmly into the side of the old man’s neck, leaning close to listen to his chest. Ten long, agonizing seconds passed without a word.

Security Officer: I HAVE A PULSE! IT'S EXTREMELY WEAK AND SLOW, BUT HE HAS A PULSE!

David: CALL AN AMBULANCE! CALL 911 NOW!

Leo: I TOLD YOU! I TOLD YOU HE WAS ALIVE!

Chaos erupted across the cemetery lawns. Guests began shouting, pulling out cell phones, running toward the emergency access gate. David reached into the coffin, gently holding his father’s cold, clammy hand.

David: Hold on, Dad! Please hold on! Help is coming!

As the paramedics were being summoned over the radio, David whirled around, his eyes burning with rage as he searched for his wife.

David: EVELYN!

Evelyn had already broken away from the security officer and was running frantically across the grass toward her Mercedes, trying to dig her car keys out of her designer handbag.

David: STOP HER! DON'T LET HER GET IN THAT CAR!
