The sharp siren of the emergency medical vehicle cut through the distance, growing louder as the ambulance pulled up directly onto the grass path. Paramedics rushed out with a gurney, oxygen tanks, and resuscitation equipment.
Paramedic: We have a severe hypothermic bradycardia! Administer atropine immediately! Get him on oxygen!
They lifted Arthur carefully onto the stretcher, placing an oxygen mask over his mouth. As the medical team stabilized him, Arthur’s eyelids flickered open slowly. He looked up through blurry vision, his gaze landing directly on his grandson, Leo.
Arthur: (Whispering weakly under mask) Leo... my brave boy...
Leo: Grandpa! You're awake!
Arthur: You... saved me...
Police cruisers arrived minutes later with flashing red and blue lights, blocking the cemetery entrance. Police handcuffs snapped tightly around Evelyn’s wrists as she was read her rights against attempted murder, grand fraud, and medical tampering.
Police Officer: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Evelyn: David! Please! Call my lawyer! Tell them it was an accident!
David turned his back on her, completely ignoring her screams as the officers loaded her into the back of the police car.
Three months later, Arthur Vance sat comfortably in the sunroom of his Dallas home, fully recovered and holding his updated legal will. Standing next to him was David, and sitting on the armrest was young Leo.
Arthur: The entire estate trust has been restructured, David. Evelyn’s legal claims have been completely revoked by the court, and her criminal trial begins next month.
David: She will be behind bars for a very long time, Dad.
Arthur: Good. But more importantly, this home and the family legacy belong to the boy who listened when nobody else would.
Arthur placed his hand over Leo’s small hand, handing him the legal deed to the estate trust, set in a permanent protective guardianship until he came of age.
Leo: I just wanted my Grandpa back.
Arthur: And you brought me back, son. You brought me back.
