The Abuse Behind Closed Doors

A Mother's Broken Heart and The Secret Will

David: Mom, look at me. Please, look at me. Are you okay?

Margaret: David... oh, my boy... you came back.

David: I’m here, Mom. I’m right here. Did she hit you? Has she been hurting you like this while I was at work?

Margaret: I didn't want to say anything... I didn't want to ruin your marriage, son.

David: Ruin my marriage?! She just pulled your hair and left you crying on the floor!

David pulled a fresh meal out of the paper bag he had dropped and quickly opened the container with trembling hands.

David: Eat, Mother. Please, eat something. You're shaking.

Margaret: She... she didn't let me eat breakfast yesterday either, David. She said I was wasting money.

David: God forgive me... how did I not see this? How long has this been happening?

Jessica stood a few feet away, her jaw clenched, her hand still pressing against her red cheek.

Jessica: Oh, stop making her look like a saint, David! She’s manipulative! She's been hiding things from us!

David: Shut up, Jessica! Just shut up!

Jessica: I won't shut up! We have a mortgage to pay on this place! We're drowning in debt, and she's sitting on a million-dollar estate and won't give us a dime!

David: This is my mother's home! My father built this house with his own hands before he passed away! You have no right to her estate!

Margaret: David, please... don't fight. My heart can't take this.

David: Take it easy, Mom. Take a sip of water. I'm right here with you.

Jessica: You think you're so noble, David? Ask her about the bank accounts! Ask her why the bank called yesterday about a freeze on the property title!

David turned his head sharply toward his wife, his eyes narrowed.

David: What freeze? What are you talking about?

Jessica: She locked us out! She went behind our backs to a lawyer last week!

Margaret: I had to protect what your father left... I had to, David.

David: Mom... what did you do?

Margaret: She was trying to force me to sign a quitclaim deed, David. She told me if I didn't sign this house over to her name, she would put me in an institution far away from here.

David's blood ran cold. He turned slowly to look at Jessica, who stepped back slightly, her expression shifting from anger to sudden panic.

David: Is this true, Jessica? Were you threatening to send my mother away?

Jessica: She’s losing her mind, David! You can't believe a word she says!

Margaret: I have the papers in my room, David. The lawyer drafted a full protection trust. Everything is documented.

David: Get out of this room, Jessica. Go upstairs right now before I call the police on you for elder abuse.

Jessica: You wouldn't dare!

David: Try me. Get out!

Jessica turned on her heel and stomped up the stairs, slamming the bedroom door above them. David turned back to his mother, gently wiping a tear from her cheek.

David: Mom, tell me everything. From the very beginning.
