Margaret: It started six months ago, right after you took that promotion at the firm and started traveling so much.
David: Six months? You've been suffering for six months?
Margaret: She was subtle at first. She would take away my phone when you left. She told me I was a burden on your finances and your career.
David: You're my mother! You could never be a burden! I pay all the bills here!
Margaret: No, David... you don't know everything. Jessica told you she was managing the household expenses, right?
David: Yes, she handles the bank accounts. I transfer my paycheck into our joint account every two weeks.
Margaret: She hasn't been paying the mortgage, David. She’s been spending it on luxury goods and secret accounts.
David froze, his jaw tightening as he processed his mother's words.
David: What are you saying?
Margaret: Last month, a notice came from the bank. A foreclosure warning. I intercepted it at the mailbox before she could burn it like the others.
David: Foreclosure?! On my father's house?!
Margaret: Yes. She took out a secondary loan against the house six months ago. She forged your signature, David.
David stood up, his breathing heavy and ragged as he paced the bright marble floor.
David: A secondary loan? How much?
Margaret: Over two hundred thousand dollars. When I found out, I confronted her. That’s when the abuse started getting worse.
David: Why didn't you call me? Why didn't you tell me when I came home from my business trips?
Margaret: She threatened to hurt you, David! She said she would ruin your life, file for a messy divorce, take half of everything you owned, and leave you with nothing!
David clamped his hands over his face, a mixture of guilt and rage tearing through him.
David: I was so blind... I thought she was taking care of you while I was away. I trusted her.
Margaret: She wanted me to sign over the family trust fund that your father left in my name. That’s the only money she couldn't touch without my physical signature in front of a notary public.
David: That trust fund is meant for your medical care and your retirement!
Margaret: She wanted to use it to pay off the forged loan before you found out during tax season.
David: That's fraud. That's grand theft. That's criminal!
Margaret: I went to your father's estate attorney last week, Mr. Henderson. I told him everything. He froze the property deed and set up a legal inquiry into the bank accounts.
David looked down at his mother, feeling a profound sense of respect for her quiet strength despite her physical frailty.
David: You did the right thing, Mom. You were protecting us both.
Margaret: But she found out today, David. Mr. Henderson sent a formal notice to the house this morning. When Jessica opened it... she lost her mind.
David: That's why she was dragging you on the floor.
Margaret: She demanded I call Mr. Henderson and revoke the trust freeze immediately.
David pulled his phone out of his pocket, his hand steady with grim determination.
David: She isn't getting a single dollar. And she isn't staying in this house another night.
