FABLE

Forced to Shave Her Head on Her Wedding Day

The hum of the electric hair clipper vibrated through Clara’s fingers, sending cold shivers straight down her spine. Standing in the sunlit bridal suite, surrounded by layers of white lace and soft ivory tulle, her body shook so violently she could barely hold the plastic handle steady.

Tears tracked heavy paths through the foundation on her cheeks, dripping onto the shiny hardwood floor. In front of her sat seven-year-old Lily, her stepdaughter-to-be, sobbing uncontrollably while clutching a small pink teddy bear against her chest. The little girl’s golden curls hung unevenly around her tear-stained face.

Clara: Don't worry, sweetheart. I... I trim my dog's fur regularly. It's going to be okay. Please stop crying, Lily.

Lily: It hurts, Clara! I don't want my hair gone! I want my hair back!

Clara: I know, baby. I know. But we don't have a choice right now. Just close your eyes and look at me.

The heavy oak door swung open with a loud thud, slamming against the drywall. Julian stood in the doorway, his tall frame blocking the hallway light. His dark navy wedding suit was immaculate, but his eyes were bloodshot, his jaw clenched so tightly the muscles in his cheek twitched.

Julian: What the hell is going on in here?!

Lily: Daddy! Daddy! Look what she's doing to me!

Julian: Clara! Are you out of your mind?! Put that damn clipper down right now!

Clara: Julian, wait! Let me explain before you freak out!

Julian: Touch my things again and the wedding is over!

He lunged forward, his heavy leather shoes squeaking against the floor, and grabbed her wrist with a force that made her drop the clippers. The buzzing tool clattered against the vanity table, knocking over bottles of designer perfume and expensive liquid foundation before hitting the rug.

Clara: Julian, you're hurting me! You don't know what happened!

Julian: Wedding? What wedding! Look at my daughter!

Without a second thought, Julian grabbed her left hand, yanked the platinum diamond engagement ring off her ring finger, and hurled it violently across the room. The ring bounced off the bedside table and vanished into the pile of cut hair scattered on the floor.

Clara: Call 911 right now! Call the police!
