Within twenty minutes, two uniformed police officers arrived at the suburban Dallas residence. Chloe had met them at the driveway, handing them a flash drive containing the raw, unedited footage from the home camera system.
Officer Davis: Mr. Miller, we reviewed the footage on the drive over. The action shown on the video clearly meets the criteria for reckless endangerment of a minor.
Mark: I want to press full charges, Officer. She is not permitted on this property ever again.
Brenda: Officer, this is a domestic misunderstanding! I was trying to save the baby!
Officer Davis: Ma'am, the camera angle clearly shows you unlocking the wheel brake and applying forward physical force to the handles while the mother was out of the room. Please put your hands behind your back.
Brenda: Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?! Mark, tell them to stop!
Mark turned his back on Brenda, stepping toward the sofa where Sarah was nursing little Maya. He didn't offer a single word in Brenda's defense as the metal handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
Officer Davis: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
As the officers led a screaming, hysterical Brenda out the front door, the heavy silence returned to the living room. Chloe closed the front door and locked the deadbolt securely.
Chloe: She's gone, Sarah. She can't touch you or Maya ever again.
Sarah: I still can't believe she did that... She looked me right in the eye and lied while Maya was crying.
Mark: I failed you both. I was so blind... I was so desperate to feel young and happy that I ignored every red flag you girls pointed out.
Chloe: You were fooled by a manipulator, Dad. But you listened when it counted.
Mark: No, Chloe. I yelled at Sarah first. I took Brenda's word over my own daughter's. I will never forgive myself for that.
Mark sat beside Sarah on the couch, taking her hand in his. Tears slipped silently down his face as he looked at his newborn granddaughter, now fast asleep in Sarah's arms.
Sarah: Dad... you were scared. You thought Maya was in danger. I understand why you reacted like that.
Mark: That's no excuse. From this day on, things change. I'm updating my will and setting up full irrevocable trusts for you and Chloe. No outsider will ever come between this family again.
