Three months later, the sun shone brightly over the backyard garden of Mark's house. A gentle breeze blew through the oak trees as the family gathered around a wooden patio table set for lunch.
Chloe: Dad, pass the lemonade, please.
Mark: Coming right up. Sarah, how's little Maya doing with her nap?
Sarah: Sleeping like an angel in her crib upstairs. And yes, Dad, the video monitor is right here next to my plate.
Mark chuckled, a warm, genuine smile filling his face for the first time in months. The heavy dark circles under his eyes had faded, replaced by a relaxed, peaceful expression.
Mark: I know, I know... I've become an overprotective grandpa. I can't help it.
Chloe: You have every right to be. By the way, Mr. Vance called this morning. The criminal court hearing for Brenda was finalized.
Mark: And?
Chloe: She accepted a plea bargain for felony child endangerment. Two years probation, 500 hours of community service, and a permanent restraining order protecting our entire family.
Sarah: Good. She'll never be able to come near Maya again.
Mark nodded slowly, pouring lemonade into three glasses. He set one down in front of Sarah and another in front of Chloe before taking a seat across from them.
Mark: The legal team also finished restructuring the family estate. The house, the business investments, and the life insurance policies are all officially placed in an irrevocable trust managed jointly by the two of you.
Sarah: Dad, you didn't have to do all that...
Mark: I did, Sarah. I spent too much time letting an outsider make me doubt the people who actually loved me. You and Chloe are my life. Everything I built is for you two and Maya.
Chloe: To family. The real kind.
Sarah: To family.
They clinked their glasses together in the warm afternoon sun. Inside the house, the baby monitor hummed softly, showing sweet little Maya sleeping peacefully in her crib, completely safe and surrounded by love.
