Sarah: And the custody hearing?
David: The judge granted me full emergency sole custody. The criminal charges against her for wire fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment are moving forward next week. She's looking at at least fifteen years in federal prison.
David sat across from Sarah in a quiet coffee shop near the city center. A heavy silence settled over the table as he slid a thick white envelope across the wood toward her.
Sarah: What is this, Mr. Sterling?
David: It’s a settlement check for five hundred thousand dollars. It's for the emotional distress, the wrongful arrest, and the physical assault you suffered at my house. It's not enough to undo the harm I caused, but I want to make sure you never have to worry about money again.
Sarah: I didn't save Maya for your money, David.
