The quiet afternoon in the quiet Dallas suburb had felt safe until the glass shattered against the cold tile. Seven-year-old Lily stood at the edge of the kitchen, her body trembling in her yellow pajamas. Her eyes were fixed on the green liquid pooling across the pristine white marble, soaking the edges of the rug.
Lily: Daddy, don't drink it! It is poison!
Her voice cracked through the silence of the large house, carrying a terror far beyond her years. Standing across from her, holding a crystal glass with a look of pure coldness, was Evelyn, her father’s new wife of less than six months.
Evelyn: Shut your mouth right now, you little brat!
Mark: What is going on here? What did you just say to my daughter?
Mark rushed into the kitchen, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned as he dropped to his knees right beside the puddle of bright green liquid. He pulled Lily into his arms, feeling the intense shaking of her tiny frame. The sight of his daughter weeping so frantically shattered any illusion of a happy blended family.
Lily: She put it in your cup, Daddy! She put the poison in your cup when you were on the phone!
Evelyn: She’s lying, Mark! She’s trying to destroy us because she hates that I’m here! You know how manipulative kids can be after a divorce!
Mark: Are you trying to murder my family? Are you out of your mind, Evelyn?
Evelyn: Mark, look at me! I would never hurt you or your daughter! She knocked the glass out of my hand because she’s throwing a violent tantrum!
Lily: I saw her! I saw her take the bottle from under the sink and pour it into your glass!
Mark: Get out of my way.
Mark stood up slowly, his face drained of all warmth, his eyes fixed on the woman he had trusted with his home and his child. He grabbed Evelyn firmly by the arm, ignoring her sharp gasp as he dragged her toward the front entrance of the mansion.
Evelyn: Let go of me! You can't treat me like this! I'm your wife!
Mark: You are going straight to federal prison! Call 911 right now, Lily!
Evelyn: You're making the biggest mistake of your life, Mark! You have no idea what you're doing!
Mark: You're safe now, sweetheart. I will never let her near you again.
He slammed the front door, locking it tight, before gathering Lily back into his arms. But as the sound of police sirens echoed in the distant streets, Mark had no idea that the broken glass on the floor was only the very first layer of a terrifying plot that had been set in motion long before he ever met Evelyn.
