The grandfather clock in the grand hallway of our Dallas mansion chimed six times. Afternoon light spilled over the white marble floor, casting long, elegant shadows across the quiet estate. Upward of ten million dollars sat tied up in my father’s real estate holdings, a massive fortune that had recently become the center of quiet arguments behind closed doors.
My father, David, stood near the kitchen island wearing his tailored work suit. He looked exhausted after a long week of corporate negotiations and court hearings regarding our family estate. Next to him stood my stepmother, Victoria, dressed in a sleek beige suit, her eyes glowing with a calm that felt utterly fake.
Victoria: Here, David. Drink this fresh wheatgrass blend. It will help clear your mind before the lawyers arrive to review the trust fund documents.
David: Thanks, Victoria. My head is pounding from all this legal stress. I really appreciate you taking care of me.
She handed him a tall glass filled with dark green liquid, her smile tight and unyielding. She stepped back, watching his every move with sharp, focused intensity.
I stood hidden behind the hallway archway in my bright yellow pajamas, my chest heaving and my pulse racing at a dangerous speed. Just two minutes ago, I had watched from the pantry doorway as Victoria emptied a small glass vial containing a toxic chemical into that exact glass. She thought no one was looking, but I saw the entire thing.
My heart hammered against my ribs as David raised the glass toward his lips, completely unaware of the lethal trap set before him.
David: Looks healthy. Let’s hope it works fast.
Victoria: Drink it all, honey. Every single drop.
I couldn't stay hidden for another second. If he took even one sip of that poisoned drink, my father would die, and Victoria would inherit everything we had ever built.
I took a deep breath, burst out from behind the hallway pillar, and sprinted at full speed across the marble floor toward the kitchen, screaming at the top of my lungs.
Lily: DADDY, DON'T DRINK IT! IT IS POISON!
