Panic in the Sterile Ward

The Boy Touched His Dying Brother and Shocked Every Doctor

Dr. Harrison: His vitals are stabilizing completely! That... that is medically impossible.

Nurse Clara: Pulse is eighty... ninety-five... steady at one hundred ten. Oxygen saturation is shooting back to ninety-nine percent.

Elena dropped to her knees, both hands trembling violently over her mouth.

Elena: He is breathing. Mark, look at his little chest, he is breathing naturally!

Mark did not smile. He yanked Toby backward by the collar of his hoodie, his knuckles white with fury.

Mark: What did you just do?! What kind of sick trick did you just pull in here?

Toby: I did not pull a trick, Dad! He was cold!

Mark: Do not call me Dad! We are in the middle of a private family crisis, and you barge in here like a feral animal!

Dr. Harrison: Sir, lower your voice. Look at the monitors. The neonatal heart failure has completely reversed.

Mark: I do not care about some fluke coincidence, Harrison! This kid broke hospital protocol and endangered my heir!

Elena: Mark, please, stop shouting! Toby came all the way from the east side in the pouring rain!

Mark: Because he wants money! Just like his bitter mother did before the divorce lawyer finalized our settlement!

Toby stood tall, his jaw clenched tight as tears welled in his brown eyes.

Toby: He is going to live. But you do not deserve him.

Mark: How dare you speak to me like that inside this hospital? I pay the bills here! I own the private estate you sleep in!

Dr. Harrison: Mr. Vance, please step into my office. We need to run immediate blood panels on both the newborn and your elder son.

Mark: My elder son? Toby is my ex-wife’s mistake! He has no legal claim to my family business or my estate!

Elena: Mark! How can you say that right now when Leo is alive because of him?

Mark: Because science does not work through magic handshakes, Elena! Somebody tampered with the IV drip before we transferred him!

Nurse Clara: I checked that line myself three minutes ago, sir. It was clean.

Mark: Then you are incompetent! I will have your nursing license revoked before sundown!

Toby reached into his backpack, his fingers brushing against a worn, faded manila envelope.

Toby: You always think everyone is lying to you, Mark. That is why Mom left you.

Mark: Shut your mouth before I call security to throw you into the street!

Dr. Harrison: Enough! Look at the child’s skin tone. The cyanosis is gone. He is sleeping peacefully.

Elena: Toby... what did you whisper to him right before the beeping stopped?

Toby looked directly into his stepmother’s eyes, his expression solemn beyond his years.

Toby: I told him the truth about our family. I told him why you were both so scared of him dying.

Mark: You little punk... what did your mother tell you before she sent you here?

Toby: She did not send me. The will did.

Mark froze, the color draining instantly from his sun-tanned face.

Mark: What did you just say?

Toby: You heard me. Grandfather’s trust fund was never meant for you.
