FABLE

A Hidden Family Secret

The Boy Touched His Dying Brother and Shocked Every Doctor

Mark: You are lying! My father left everything to my biological lineage!

Toby: Then why did your lawyer call Mom three days ago begging for an emergency signature?

Elena stood up slowly from the hospital floor, wiping mascara from her cheeks.

Elena: Mark... what is he talking about? You told me the inheritance was fully settled last month.

Mark: Elena, do not listen to this boy. He is twelve years old and manipulated by his mother’s jealousy!

Elena: Answer me! Why was your estate attorney calling his mother?

Dr. Harrison: Folks, we have other critical patients in this corridor. Move into the private consultation room now.

The heavy mahogany doors of the conference room clicked shut, muffling the hospital noise.

Mark: Give me that backpack, Toby. Right now.

Toby: Touch my bag and I yell for the police officer standing outside the lobby.

Elena: Toby, sweetheart, please sit down. Nobody is going to hurt you.

Toby: He will. He threatened to cut Mom’s child support if she told anyone about Leo’s real medical condition.

Elena: What condition? Leo was born premature, that was all the doctors told me!

Dr. Harrison: Mrs. Vance... your husband explicitly instructed us not to share the genetic screening results with you until tomorrow.

Elena spun toward the doctor, her mouth open in horror.

Elena: You kept medical secrets from the mother? Who gave you that authority?

Mark: I hold the power of attorney over our family trust and medical decisions!

Elena: I am his mother! I carried him for eight months!

Toby: Leo has the same rare blood disorder I had when I was six.

A suffocating silence dropped over the private room.

Elena: You... had a blood disorder?

Toby: A severe bone marrow deficiency. Grandfather paid two million dollars to fly a specialist from Switzerland to cure me.

Mark: And it nearly bankrupted our family firm! That money was supposed to expand our luxury real estate holdings!

Toby: Grandfather didn't care about the buildings. He cared about me.

Elena: Mark... did you know Leo had this condition before he was born?

Mark: It was a slight risk factor on the prenatal chart! Nothing guaranteed!

Toby: He knew. Grandfather’s will states that if any male heir survives the disorder, the entire family estate transfers directly to that child’s custody trust.

Elena: And if the child does not survive?

Toby: Everything reverts to Mark. Uncontrolled. No board of trustees. No oversight.

Elena stepped back until her spine hit the cold wood paneling of the wall.

Elena: You delayed the emergency blood transfusion this morning. You told the paramedics to take the city route instead of the highway.

Mark: That was traffic! I did not control the morning gridlock!

Elena: You monster... you wanted our baby to flatline!
