FABLE

The Broken Ring and the Forgotten Vow

The bridal suite smelled of fresh jasmine and metallic dread. Clumps of soft, trimmed hair littered the polished wooden floor, catching the bright light of the vanity mirror. Outside, the murmurs of wedding guests filled the courtyard, unaware of the storm brewing inside.

Clara: Hold still, sweetheart. It’s almost done.

Lily: It tickles, Clara! Will Daddy like it?

Clara: He’ll see how brave you are. Don't worry, I trim my dog's fur regularly! It’s going to be okay.

Clara’s hands trembled as the electric clipper buzzed against seven-year-old Lily’s scalp, carefully cleaning up the ruined patches left by a practical joke gone terribly wrong. Tears tracks ran down Clara’s face, smearing her bridal makeup. She was minutes away from walking down the aisle, but protecting Mark’s young daughter came first.

The heavy oak door swung open with a violent thud, slamming against the plaster wall.

Mark: What the hell is going on in here?!

Lily: Daddy! Daddy!

Clara: Mark, let me explain—

Mark: Shut up! Just shut your mouth!

Mark rushed across the room, his eyes blazing with fury. Before Clara could stand up, his heavy hand clamped around her wrist, squeezing until her fingers went numb. He ripped the clipper from her grasp and threw it against the wall, shattering the plastic casing into pieces.

Mark: Touch my things again and the wedding is over!

Clara: Mark, you’re hurting me! Listen to me for one second!

Mark: I trusted you with my daughter! Look at her! What did you do to her hair?!

Clara: I didn't do this! She came into my room crying because—

Mark: I don't care about your excuses! You've been trying to control everything since we got engaged. My house, my estate, my child!

With a roar of anger, Mark slammed his fist onto the vanity table. Glass perfume bottles topped over, crashing to the floor and filling the air with a suffocating floral scent. The bridesmaid in the corner gasped, backing away into the bathroom.

Mark: Wedding? What wedding!

He grabbed Clara’s left hand, his face twisted in disgust. Without another word, he violently pulled off the diamond engagement ring, tearing her delicate skin in the process, and slammed the platinum band down onto the bedside table amidst the piles of cut hair.

Clara: Mark, please... look at the table, look at what’s underneath!

Mark: Get out. Get out of my sight before I call security and have you thrown off the property!

Clara clutched her bruised wrist, staring in total shock at her bare finger. Her breath came in short, panicked gasps as she realized the man she loved had never trusted her at all. But as Mark turned to grab his crying daughter, Clara saw the true villain standing in the doorway with a sly, victorious smile.
