The bright morning sun streamed through the wide windows of the suburban hallway, polishing the hardwood floors until they gleamed. In any other home, it would have been a picturesque Tuesday morning. But inside the Miller household, the quiet was shattered by the sound of small fists slamming against heavy oak wood.
Lily: Mommy! Mommy, open the door! Please open the door!
Four-year-old Lily sobbed, her tiny hands beating against the locked basement door at the end of the hallway. Her face was flushed, tears streaming down her freckled cheeks, her whole body shaking with desperation. She didn't care about the quiet order of the house. She only cared about the voice she had heard whispering behind the brass latch.
Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor. Brenda, dressed in a sharp red dress, rounded the corner with a look of sheer panic on her face. She passed a heavy wooden toolbox left on a bench, almost knocking it over.
Brenda: Lily! What are you doing? Get away from there right now!
Lily: No! Mommy is in there! I hear her!
Brenda: Stop it! Your mother is gone, Lily! She abandoned us months ago! You need to accept that!
Brenda grabbed the child’s arm firmly, attempting to pull her backward. In the struggle, Brenda’s arm brushed the edge of the open toolbox. A heavy claw hammer slipped from the edge and crashed onto the hardwood floor with a deafening clatter.
Lily: No! She didn't leave! Mommy!
With a sudden burst of energy, Lily wriggled free from Brenda's grip. She didn't run away. Instead, she lunged straight back toward the heavy wooden door, her small fingers reaching high to grab the brass latch mechanism that Brenda had forgotten to lock with the key.
Brenda: Lily, don't you dare touch that—!
The latch clicked. The heavy oak door creaked open, exposing a dark, yawning stairwell leading down into the dark basement, completely hidden from the bright world above. And from the darkness below, a weak, trembling voice called out.
