The Locked Basement Door and the Stepmother Secret

Brenda: They won't convict me! I'll tell them she was an intruder! I'll say she broke in today!

Emily: Look at my hands, Brenda. Look at the marks on my wrists from the chains you used. Look at the medical evidence that's been building up for six months. Do you really think anyone will believe your lies?

Brenda looked down at Emily's thin wrists, where red scars were clearly visible under the bright hallway lights. Her confidence shattered completely, replaced by a cold, overwhelming terror.

Brenda: I... I was just trying to keep the family together...

Mark: You were trying to steal an estate worth millions. You thought if you kept Emily hidden long enough, you could declare her legally dead and claim the life insurance payout.

Brenda: That's not true!

Mark: I found the papers in your desk last week, Brenda. I didn't understand why you had life insurance claim forms for Emily until this exact moment. You were waiting for the seven-year mark, wasn't that the plan?

The sound of red-and-blue lights flashed through the sheer curtains of the front window. Tires screeched in the driveway, followed by the heavy thud of car doors slamming shut.

Officer Harris: Police! Open up!

Mark unlocked the front door and threw it open. Two uniformed police officers stepped into the entryway, their hands resting cautiously near their belts as they took in the dramatic scene.

Mark: Officers, thank God you're here. This is my wife, Emily. She was missing for six months. She was trapped in our basement by this woman, Brenda.

Officer Harris: Ma'am, stay right where you are. Place your hands behind your back.

Brenda: This is a misunderstanding! I'm his wife! I have the marriage certificate!

Officer Harris: Turn around, ma'am. Now.

Officer Harris grabbed Brenda's arms, pulling them behind her back and snapping the steel handcuffs onto her wrists with a sharp, definitive metallic click.

Brenda: Mark! Tell them to stop! You can't do this to me! Mark!

Mark didn't answer. He turned his back on her, kneeling down to wrap his arms around Emily and Lily, pulling them both into a tight, protective embrace as the police led Brenda out to the waiting patrol car.
