The Interrupted Ceremony

The Lost Crown of Saint Jude

Marcus: Get that street rat out of here right now! He is ruining my succession!

Bishop Miller: Silence, Marcus! The sacred relic has never chosen incorrectly in two centuries!

Marcus: It’s a trick! Someone is using magnets or wires!

Bishop Miller: Look at the crown, boy. There are no wires holding it in the air.

Marcus rushed down the velvet aisle, his expensive leather shoes clicking loudly against the marble floor. Security guards moved forward, but Bishop Miller held up his hand to stop them.

Marcus: You, kid! Who put you up to this? Who paid you to come here?

Leo: Nobody, sir! I just came inside because it was raining and cold!

Marcus: Don't lie to me! You stole into the cathedral to interrupt my family's historic day!

Leo: I didn't steal anything! I was sitting in the back row hiding behind the coat rack!

Bishop Miller: Marcus, step back from the child. You are letting anger blind your reason.

Marcus: He's wearing rags, Your Grace! Look at him! He lives in a homeless shelter!

Bishop Miller: The Lord does not look at rags, Marcus. He looks at the heart and the bloodline.

Marcus: What bloodline? My grandfather built this entire foundation! My family owns the Vance Corporation!

Bishop Miller: Your grandfather was a trustee, Marcus. He was not the sole heir.

Marcus: That is a lie! My lawyer has all the legal documents right here in his briefcase!

The family attorney, Mr. Sterling, stepped forward nervously, clutching his leather briefcase tight against his chest.

Mr. Sterling: Your Grace, the legal trust fund explicitly names Marcus Vance as the primary beneficiary upon turning thirty.

Bishop Miller: Man-made papers can be forged, Mr. Sterling. The sacred relic of Saint Jude reacts only to the true bloodline of Arthur Vance.

Marcus: Arthur Vance was my great-uncle! He died without children!

Bishop Miller: That is what the public was told sixty years ago.

Leo: Mister... my name is Leo. I don't know who Arthur is.

Bishop Miller: What is your mother's name, child?

Leo: Her name is Clara Vance. She works at the bakery on 5th Street.

Marcus turned pale, taking a step backward as if he had been struck in the chest.

Marcus: Clara? That's impossible... she died in the orphanage fire thirty years ago!

Bishop Miller: She didn't die, Marcus. She was hidden away to protect her from your father's lawyers.

Marcus: You're insane! You are trying to steal my inheritance!

Bishop Miller: I am seeking the truth. Guards, lock the cathedral doors. Nobody leaves until we inspect the church registry.

Marcus: You can't lock me in here! My attorneys will file a lawsuit against this diocese before sunset!

Bishop Miller: Let them file it. God's truth is not afraid of a lawsuit.

Leo: Please, sir... can I just go home? My mom is waiting for me to bring back bread.

Bishop Miller: Child, your life is about to change forever. Do not be afraid.

Marcus: Sterling! Call the police right now! Tell them an intruder is trespassing!

Mr. Sterling: Marcus... look at the crown. It's still hovering over the boy's head.

Marcus: I don't care about the crown! Grab it and put it on my head where it belongs!
