The Bribe At The Garage

The Lost Heir Stopped His Father's Million Dollar Wedding

Julian: Tell me right now, Vanessa. What happened on Interstate 35 five years ago?

Vanessa: It was a rainstorm! The roads were slick! Everyone knows it was an accident!

Julian: The police report said the brakes suffered sudden hydraulic failure. But that Mercedes was inspected two days prior.

Leo: Mom told me the pedals felt like mush, Dad. We were going down the ramp and she couldn't stop the tires.

Julian crouched down beside Vanessa, his voice dropping to a deadly, quiet whisper that carried across the quiet pews.

Julian: Henderson was an auto mechanic before he became an investigator, wasn't he?

Vanessa: I don't know his resume! My father hired him ten years ago for fleet maintenance!

Richard: Julian, you are making reckless accusations of vehicular tampering! That is slander!

Marcus: It's not slander, Mr. Vance. Henderson just signed a sworn statement forty minutes ago.

Marcus turned his phone toward Julian and Vanessa, showing a live video feed from a Dallas police interrogation room.

Vanessa: What... what is that?

Marcus: Dallas PD picked up Thomas Henderson at the Greyhound bus station twenty minutes ago trying to flee to San Antonio. He rolled immediately.

Julian: Put it on speaker, Marcus.

Marcus tapped the screen, and a gravelly, trembling voice echoed through the hall's sound system.

Henderson's Voice: It was Vanessa Vance. She gave me fifty grand cash in an envelope behind the auto shop on Industrial Boulevard. She told me to bleed the secondary brake line just enough so it would fail at highway speed.

A horrified scream erupted from Claire’s elderly aunt in the second row.

Vanessa: He’s lying! He’s trying to pin his own crimes on me to get a plea deal!

Henderson's Voice: I didn't want the kid in the car. That was an accident. When I followed the wreck down into the ditch, the kid was still alive in the back seat crying for his mother. I called Vanessa from the highway, and she told me to take him and keep him in the old barn or she’d frame me for the whole thing.

Julian closed his eyes for three agonizing seconds, his jaw trembling as tears of pure grief burned his cheeks.

Julian: Claire didn't die from bad weather. You murdered my wife.

Vanessa: She had everything! She had your love, she had the family trust, she was the golden girl of Dallas society!

Julian: She was your best friend since junior high school!

Vanessa: She took you away from me! You were supposed to ask me to the winter formal in college, and she walked in and took you!

Julian: You killed the mother of my child over a college grudge?

Vanessa: I wanted you to have a real life! A life with me, running both our family empires together!

Leo: Dad, my arm hurts from when she pushed me...

Julian instantly turned his back on Vanessa, stepping over her torn lace train to reach his son.

He lifted Leo into his arms, holding the boy’s head against his shoulder as the kid wrapped his thin arms tightly around his neck.

Julian: You're safe now, Leo. You are never, ever going back to that dark cellar.

Leo: Are we going home, Dad? To the house with the big oak tree in the front yard?

Julian: Yes, son. We're going home right now.

The heavy sirens from outside suddenly grew deafening as flashing red and blue lights illuminated the stained-glass windows.

Six Dallas tactical officers, accompanied by two Texas state troopers, burst through the double doors with zip-ties and handcuffs ready.
