Officer Martinez: Dallas Police! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!
The armed officers moved briskly down the center aisle, their boots thudding against the polished marble floor.
Richard: Officer, I am Richard Vance! My legal team is already filing emergency injunctions!
Officer Martinez: Sir, step back against the pew right now, or you will be placed in custody for obstruction of justice.
Vanessa: Dad! Help me! Don't let them put handcuffs on me in my wedding dress!
Officer Martinez knelt beside Vanessa, grabbing both of her wrists firmly behind her back.
The metallic click of the steel cuffs snapped shut, echoing sharply against the pristine white walls.
Vanessa: Julian! Look at me! Tell them this is a family misunderstanding! You can't let them take me to jail!
Julian: You aren't going to jail, Vanessa. You're going to a maximum security penitentiary for capital murder and child kidnapping.
Vanessa: You're destroying our families! Think of what the press will say tomorrow morning!
Julian: The press will say that a monster was caught before she could steal another dime of my family's legacy.
Officer Martinez hauled Vanessa to her feet, her ripped dress trailing through the scattered flower petals on the floor.
Officer Martinez: Vanessa Vance, you are under arrest for first-degree kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, and capital murder. You have the right to remain silent.
Vanessa: I hate you, Julian! I hope you look at that brat every single day and remember that you lost me!
Julian: Looking at him is the greatest blessing of my entire life.
Two officers escorted Vanessa down the aisle, her frantic sobbing filling the silent chapel as the guests parted to let them pass.
Richard Vance tried to follow, but a state trooper stepped in front of him, displaying an official search warrant.
Trooper Davis: Richard Vance, we have a warrant for your personal laptop and all corporate server backups at Vance Logistics headquarters.
Richard: On what grounds?!
Trooper Davis: Subpoenaed records show two wire transfers of corporate funds authorized by your signature to Thomas Henderson's offshore bank.
Richard’s face drained of color as he gripped the wooden pew to steady himself.
Richard: I... I didn't know what the funds were for! Vanessa told me it was private security!
Trooper Davis: You can explain that to the grand jury, sir. Step outside please.
Julian stood tall at the front of the sanctuary, still holding Leo tightly in his arms as the officers cleared the church.
A paramedic team rushed in through the side doors carrying a medical emergency kit and a blanket.
Paramedic: Mr. Sterling? Let us take a look at the boy's cheek and those scrapes on his arms.
Julian: Please. Check everything. He hasn't seen a real doctor in five years.
Leo: Dad, don't let go of my hand.
Julian: I'm not going anywhere, Leo. I am holding your hand the entire time.
The paramedic gently placed an antiseptic wipe against Leo's cheek, smiling warmly at the boy.
Paramedic: You are one tough kid, Leo. Just a few scrapes and a small bruise, but you're going to be totally fine.
Leo: I had to be tough. Mom told me my dad was the strongest man in Texas, and I had to be strong like him.
Julian pressed his face into his son's hair, letting the warm tears soak into the boy's worn flannel shirt.
