The cold marble floor of the grand estate pressed hard against Evelyn’s knees. She pulled the tiny, two-month-old baby girl closer to her chest, whispering soft words as the infant nursed quietly under her cotton apron. The grand living room smelled of expensive perfumes and polished mahogany, but to Evelyn, it only smelled like fear.
Evelyn: Please, baby... soft now. Shh...
She had worked as a live-in maid for the Vance family for barely three months, but every single day felt like walking on thin ice. Ever since Victoria, the sleek and icy stepmother, had taken control of the household after the old matriarch passed away, the mansion felt less like a home and more like a gilded cage.
Victoria: What do you think you are doing on my hand-woven silk rug?
Evelyn froze. She turned her head slowly to see Victoria standing in the archway, her eyes burning with pure malice. Before Evelyn could even explain, Victoria rushed forward, her designer heels clicking sharply against the floor. With a furious roar, Victoria raised her hand and struck Evelyn hard across the face.
Victoria: GET AWAY FROM HER!
The crack echoed through the massive room. Evelyn fell back, clutching her reddened cheek, shielding the infant with her entire body as the baby erupted into hysterical crying.
Evelyn: PLEASE DON'T HURT HER! I was just feeding her! She was starving, ma'am!
Victoria: You dirty, penniless stray! You don't lay a finger on that child! You don't feed her, you don't look at her!
Heavy footsteps thundered down the hallway. Marcus Vance, the wealthy head of the family, burst into the room wearing his tailored charcoal suit. His face turned pale, then dark red with explosive rage as he took in the sight of the maid cowering on the floor and his wife standing over her with a raised fist.
Marcus: Victoria! What the hell are you doing?!
Victoria: Marcus, darling! This useless girl was violating our house rules! She took the baby without permission!
Marcus didn't hesitate. He marched across the marble floor, his eyes blazing, and delivered a powerful slap across Victoria's face. The blow sent her stumbling back against a glass display table.
Marcus: DON'T YOU EVER TOUCH THEM!
Victoria gasped, holding her cheek in absolute shock, her eyes wide with horror and embarrassment.
Victoria: You... you hit me? Over a servant?!
Marcus: She is not a servant, Victoria! And that baby isn't who you think she is!
Marcus knelt down on the cold floor, his hands trembling as he helped Evelyn stand up. He wrapped his arms around her shoulder and gently patted the crying baby's back.
Marcus: You are safe now, Evelyn. Both of you. The lies end today.
