The rain began to pour over the sprawling estate as Elena walked down the long, gated driveway. She didn't have a car; she lived in the small staff quarters near the edge of the property. She hurried into the small cottage, locking the door behind her.
Elena: God give me strength... they're going to destroy everything.
She pulled a small, worn leather notebook from under her mattress. Inside were dates, times, and handwritten notes she had taken over the last two months. She flipped through the pages with trembling fingers until she found the entry from three weeks ago.
Elena: "October 14th — Victoria spoke with the estate lawyer regarding the trust fund terms."
Elena remembered that afternoon clearly. She had been folding laundry near the study when she overheard Victoria speaking hushed words into her phone.
Victoria (Memory): If the baby doesn't survive until her first birthday, does the full inheritance revert back to Marcus's primary estate? Answer me clearly, Arthur!
Elena had backed away in terror back then, assuming she had misinterpreted the conversation. But over the following weeks, small "accidents" began happening around the house. A loose bolt on the crib railing. A bottle of formula left near an unsterilized counter. A misplaced baby gate at the top of the marble stairs.
Elena: She wasn't careless. She was trying to get rid of Sophia the whole time.
Suddenly, a soft knock came at her cottage door. Elena froze, holding the notebook tightly against her chest.
Elena: Who's there?
Arthur: Open the door, Elena. It's Arthur Pendelton.
Arthur was the Vance family's senior estate attorney, a cold man in an expensive grey suit who managed the family's multi-million-dollar trusts and legal affairs.
Elena: Mr. Pendelton... what are you doing here?
Elena opened the door just a crack. Arthur slipped inside, shaking the rain off his umbrella.
Arthur: I heard about the incident in the main house. Marcus called me to prepare a non-disclosure agreement and a severance package for you.
Elena: I don't want your money. I want Marcus to know what his wife is doing!
Arthur: Marcus is emotional right now. But you need to understand how things work in this world, Elena. A maid's word against a wealthy heiress means nothing in a courtroom.
Elena: Victoria pushed that stroller! She ripped her glove trying to throw her own child over that railing!
Arthur: Victoria is not Sophia's biological mother, Elena. You know that as well as I do.
Elena stopped breathing. Her eyes widened as she stared at the lawyer.
Elena: What did you just say?
Arthur: Ah... so you didn't know that part. Interesting.
Elena: She... she isn't her mother?
Arthur: Sophia was born via a surrogate in California. Marcus's late sister was the donor before she passed away. Victoria signed the adoption papers six months ago only to secure her place in the Vance family estate trust.
Elena: So if Sophia is gone...
Arthur: If Sophia passes away before Marcus turns forty next month, the entire eighty-million-dollar oil fortune transfers directly to Victoria's family holding company under the terms of the prenuptial agreement.
Elena: She married him for the trust... and now she's trying to eliminate the heir!
Arthur: I am telling you this so you understand the forces you are fighting. Here is a check for fifty thousand dollars. Sign this paper, leave Dallas tonight, and never speak of this again.
Elena: You know what she's doing, and you're helping her?!
Arthur: I represent the estate, Elena. My job is to prevent scandals, not solve family moral dilemmas.
Elena: Take your check and get out of my room.
Arthur: Think carefully, Elena. If you stay, Victoria will make sure you end up in a state prison for attempted murder. You can't win this.
Elena: Get out!
Arthur set the check on the wooden table, gave a cold smile, and walked back out into the pouring rain. Elena grabbed the check, tore it into pieces, and threw it into the trash. She had to save that baby, no matter what it cost her.
