The pristine marble floor of the Dallas mansion echoed with the deafening sound of a scream. Above the second-floor balcony, a blanket-wrapped bundle slipped from the maid's hands. For a terrifying second, time stood still as the infant tumbled toward the hard stone below.
Elena: No! Dear God, no!
Elena, the fair-skinned maid with tired eyes and worn hands, didn't think. She threw her body across the polished floor, skidding on her knees with desperate speed. Her arms stretched out as far as they could reach, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Elena: I've got you! I've got you, baby!
Her hands cupped tightly around the blanket just inches above the marble. The impact brought her crashing down, but she pulled the infant against her chest, wrapping her body around the small frame like a human shield. Tears streamed down her cheeks, washing away the dust of a long morning's work.
Elena: Shh... I've got you, you're safe! You're safe, sweet angel.
The heavy oak front doors burst open with a loud bang, rattling the glass wall sconces. Marcus Vance, a wealthy Texas oil heir, stepped into the grand foyer. His tailored suit was crisp, but his face darkened instantly as he saw his maid weeping on the floor with his newborn daughter.
Victoria: Marcus! Thank God you're home!
Standing on the balcony above, Victoria Vance pointed a shaking, manicured finger downward. Her diamond ring caught the light as her voice pierced the silence of the massive house.
Victoria: She tried to kill our baby! She dropped her right over the railing!
Marcus: What did you just say?!
Marcus rushed forward, his face twisting with rage as he stared up at his wife and then down at the terrified maid.
Elena: Mr. Vance, please! That's not what happened! I caught her!
Marcus: Don't you dare lie to me! Get out of my house right now! I'm calling 911!
Elena clutched the baby tighter, but Marcus snatched the infant away, leaving Elena sobbing on the cold marble, framed by the shadow of the massive American flag hanging in the grand entrance. But the truth behind the baby's fall was far darker than anyone in that mansion dared to admit.
