David: "A life insurance policy on my two-year-old daughter? Evelyn, tell me she's lying right now."
Evelyn: "She doesn't know what she's talking about! She can barely read legal documents!"
Maria: "I know how to read a million-dollar payout clause, ma'am. It was sitting right next to the adoption papers."
Two Dallas police officers burst through the front door, their hands resting on their holsters as they assessed the situation inside the grand foyer.
Officer Miller: "Sir! We received a call about a toddler in danger. What's going on here?"
David: "Officer, my wife just threw my daughter off that balcony. My house maid caught her in mid-air."
Officer Miller: "Ma'am, step down the stairs slowly with your hands where we can see them."
Evelyn: "This is a misunderstanding! My husband is keying up false charges because he wants a divorce!"
Officer Miller: "Step down now, ma'am!"
Evelyn slowly walked down the grand marble staircase, her heels clicking softly against the stone. Her eyes were fixed on Maria with a fiery rage that made Maria shudder.
Evelyn: "You ruined everything, you miserable little peasant."
Officer Miller: "Watch your tongue, ma'am. Place your hands behind your back."
David: "Officer, I need you to check the study on the main floor. The maid says there are illegal documents on the desk."
Officer Davis: "I'll secure the room right now. Nobody touches anything."
The second officer walked quickly into the private study while Officer Miller snapped silver handcuffs around Evelyn's delicate wrists. She winced as the metal clicked tight.
Evelyn: "David, please! You're making a huge mistake! Think about our reputation in the city!"
David: "Reputation? You tried to murder my only child for money!"
Evelyn: "It wasn't for money! It was never about the money!"
David: "Then what was it about?!"
Officer Davis returned from the study carrying a thick red envelope inside a plastic evidence bag. His face was grim as he looked at David.
Officer Davis: "Sir, we found this on the desk. Along with a notarized document signed by a lawyer named Richard Sterling."
David: "Richard Sterling? That's my family's estate lawyer. Why is his signature on her paperwork?"
Maria: "Sir... when I was wiping down the desk earlier, I heard her talking on the phone with someone named Richard."
David: "What did she say to him?"
Maria: "She said, 'Once the baby is out of the picture, the whole estate defaults to me through the new will.' That's what she said."
David felt a cold chill run down his spine. He took a step back, staring at the woman he had married just eighteen months ago.
David: "The new will? I never changed my will."
Officer Davis: "Well, sir... according to these documents right here, your signature was forged on a complete revision three weeks ago."
Evelyn lowered her head, her quiet sobbing turning into a sudden, bitter laugh that echoed chillingly off the white walls of the luxury mansion.
