Lily: "Maria... hold?"
Maria: "Of course, sweetie. Come here."
Maria gently took the child into her arms, holding her close as David walked over to the large glass windows looking out over the front driveway. Outside, police cruisers were driving away, their sirens fading into the distant Dallas traffic.
David: "The trial is going to be brutal, but I will make sure Evelyn and Richard spend the rest of their lives behind bars."
Maria: "Justice will prevail, sir. God sees everything."
David: "He certainly saw you stepping up when my daughter needed a savior."
Six months later, the Dallas County Courthouse was packed with reporters and news cameras. The high-profile trial of Evelyn Vance and attorney Richard Sterling had captivated the entire nation.
Judge Henderson: "The defendants will please stand for sentencing."
Evelyn stood up in her orange prison jumpsuit, her hair unkempt and her eyes sunken. Beside her, Richard Sterling looked pale and defeated in his prison uniform.
Judge Henderson: "For the charges of attempted capital murder, forgery, and conspiracy to commit murder, I sentence both of you to life in prison without the possibility of parole."
Evelyn burst into loud, hysterical tears as the gavel slammed down with a resounding boom against the wooden block.
Judge Henderson: "Court is adjourned."
David, sitting in the front row with Maria and little Lily, let out a deep breath of relief that he had been holding for half a year. He looked at Maria and smiled warmly.
David: "It's finally over. We can finally live in peace."
Maria: "Yes, sir. Lily can grow up safe and happy now."
David: "And so can you, Maria. You turned this house back into a real home."
They walked out of the courtroom together, stepping into the bright Texas sunshine as a united family, leaving the dark shadows of betrayal forever behind them.
