Marcus: Elena, what are you talking about? Lily says there’s someone inside here.
Elena: She’s just playing a game, Marcus! You know how imaginative she is. Please, just come to bed.
Marcus: She slid a plate of food under the door, Elena. And I heard a sound inside.
Elena: It’s mice! We’ve had a pest problem for weeks. Just leave it until the morning and I’ll call an exterminator.
Lily: Mice don't eat chicken nuggets with fork and napkin, Mommy.
Elena squeezed her eyes shut, a tear slipping down her cheek as she stepped toward Marcus, reaching out to grab his arm with trembling hands.
Elena: Marcus, please. I am begging you as your wife. Do not open that door tonight.
Marcus: What are you hiding from me? Why are you shaking like this?
Elena: You don't understand what’s at stake here. You don't know what it will do to this family!
Marcus: I’m opening this door. Move back.
Marcus pulled his arm free from Elena’s grip. He felt a cold sweat breaking out across the back of his neck as he unlatched the wooden panel. The door creaked open, releasing a draft of cold, dusty air into the warm hallway. He aimed the powerful beam of his flashlight into the pitch-black crawlspace.
Marcus: Hello? Is someone in there?
The flashlight beam swept over old cardboard boxes, stacks of dusty yellowed newspapers, and rolled-up rugs. Then, in the far back corner, the light hit a small, bunched-up pile of navy blue blankets. The pile shifted slightly, pulling back to reveal a pair of large, terrified brown eyes blinking against the sudden brightness.
Marcus: Oh my God... Elena, what is this?
Girl in Wall: Daddy?
The single word hit Marcus like a physical blow, knocking the breath straight out of his chest. The little girl huddled beneath the blankets looked roughly seven years old, wearing faded clothes, her face smeared with dust. But it wasn't just her age that made Marcus’s heart stop. Her face was an exact mirror image of Lily’s face—the same high cheekbones, the same rounded chin, the same small birthmark near her left temple.
Marcus: Who are you? Elena, who is this child?!
Elena: Marcus, put the light down, please... don't scare her!
Marcus: Answer me! Why does she look like Lily? Why is she calling me Daddy?!
Girl in Wall: I’m sorry... I was quiet... I didn't mean to make a noise...
Marcus: Elena! Tell me what is going on before I call the police right now!
Elena: If you call the police, they will take her away from me! They’ll lock me up, Marcus!
Marcus reached into the space, his arms shaking violently as he gently helped the little girl climb out onto the hallway carpet. She was thin, her skin pale from a lack of sunlight, and she clutched a worn, dust-covered framed photograph tightly against her chest. Marcus looked down at the photograph in her hands. It showed Elena standing in a hospital room seven years ago, holding two newborn baby girls wrapped in pink blankets. Twins. He stared at the picture, then at the girl, then at his wife who was now sobbing uncontrollably on the carpet floor.
