Marcus: You are not in trouble, sweetie. Never again. Come here.
Marcus sank to his knees, opening his arms. Maya hesitated for a second, looking at Elena for permission, before stepping forward and burying her small face into Marcus’s shoulder. Tears spilled down Marcus’s cheeks as he held his lost daughter for the very first time, feeling her warm, fragile breath against his neck.
Marcus: I am so sorry... I’m so sorry I didn't know you were here.
Maya: Mommy said you were working hard to build us a big house with a garden.
Marcus: Mommy lied to both of us, Maya. Elena, get up off the floor. We are going to the living room right now.
Elena: Marcus, please don't call the police... if they come, child protective services will take Maya away, and neither of us will ever see her again!
Marcus: You should have thought about that before you built a secret prison in my house! Show me this room! Show me where she’s been living!
Elena wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and led Marcus down the basement stairs. Behind a heavy wooden bookshelf in the corner of the basement was a concealed door. Elena swung it open, revealing a small, windowless room fitted with a small bed, a closet full of clothes, educational books, and a television screen showing recorded educational lessons.
Marcus: A room without windows. No fresh air, no sunlight, no friends... for seven years.
Elena: I tutored her every single day while you were at the firm! She knows how to read, she knows math, she plays the piano! I didn't neglect her, Marcus!
Marcus: You kept her living like a secret, Elena! She couldn't walk outside! She couldn't feel the sun on her face!
Elena: Because Victoria had investigators watching us! For the first three years, Victoria’s lawyers kept sending private investigators to monitor our house to see if both twins were alive!
Marcus: Victoria hasn't checked on us in four years! Why didn't you tell me then?! Why did you keep this nightmare going?!
Elena: Because I was trapped in the lie! How was I supposed to explain to you, to the court, to the world, that I had hidden a child for three years?! I thought you would leave me! I thought I would go to prison!
Marcus: You chose your own safety over our daughter’s freedom!
Elena: I was trying to keep us together! Look at the legal documents in that desk drawer! I have every record, every medical report saved! I didn't destroy her identity!
Marcus walked over to the small wooden desk in the corner of the room. He pulled open the top drawer and pulled out a thick Manila folder. Inside were official medical records from a private clinic, a birth certificate bearing the name Maya Marie Vance, and a series of legal letters stamped with the logo of a high-profile law firm in Dallas—the firm belonging to his stepmother, Victoria Vance.
