Marcus: You told me there was only one baby. Seven years ago, in that hospital... you told me our second twin died at birth!
Elena: Marcus, listen to me, I had to do it! I had no choice!
Marcus: No choice?! You let me believe our daughter died! You made me bury an empty wooden box in a cemetery!
Elena: It wasn't empty to me! I was trying to protect our family, Marcus! You don't know the whole truth!
Marcus: You kept a child hidden in a crawlspace like an animal! What kind of monster are you?!
Lily: Daddy, don't yell at Mommy! Maya is my sister!
Marcus turned to look at Lily, his mind spinning out of control. Lily was standing near the door, holding the little girl’s hand with total familiarity, as if this was something they did every single night while he was asleep or away at work.
Marcus: Lily... how long have you known about her?
Lily: Mommy told me it was a secret game. She said Maya had to stay in her special room so bad people wouldn't take her away.
Marcus: Special room? A dark storage space behind a wall is not a room!
Elena: She didn't live in the dirt, Marcus! Look closer! There’s a hidden door behind that wall that leads into the basement room! She has a bed, she has toys, she has everything!
Marcus: That doesn't make this right! Why would you keep our daughter hidden from the world? From her own father?!
Elena: Because of the trust fund, Marcus! Because of your father’s will!
Marcus stopped short, the air growing thick around him. His late father, a wealthy real estate investor in Dallas, had passed away seven years ago, right around the time the girls were born. His father’s estate was worth millions, managed through a rigid family trust with strict inheritance clauses written by high-priced estate attorneys.
Marcus: What does my father’s will have to do with hiding a human child in a wall?
Elena: Your father’s will stated that his entire estate would only go to your firstborn child if she was an only child! If there were multiple heirs, the estate was set to be split and managed by your ruthless stepmother, Victoria!
Marcus: Victoria? What does she have to do with this?
Elena: Victoria knew I was having twins! She paid off the hospital staff to falsify the birth certificates so she could claim the trust fund was invalid!
Marcus: So you pretended one died to keep the money?! You traded your own child's life for an inheritance?!
Elena: No! It wasn't about the money for me! Victoria threatened to take the babies away entirely through a custody lawsuit using her high-powered lawyers! I was terrified! I panicked!
Maya: Mommy... am I in trouble?
The soft, fragile voice of the little girl broke through the heated argument. Marcus looked down at Maya, his heart aching with a mixture of overwhelming rage toward his wife and profound, painful love for the child he had grieved for seven long years.
