Marcus: Look at these dates, Elena. These letters from Victoria’s lawyers are dated three months ago!
Elena: What? No... that’s impossible. I haven't received anything from them in years!
Marcus: She’s been blackmailing you, hasn't she? That’s why you kept Maya hidden!
Elena: I... I didn't want you to find out!
Marcus: Read this letter, Elena! Read what Victoria’s lawyer actually wrote to you!
Marcus shoved the paper into Elena’s hands. Her eyes scanned the official document, her face growing paler with every line she read. Her hands began to shake so hard she almost dropped the paper onto the concrete floor.
Elena: This... this says that Victoria surrendered her rights to the estate trust four years ago... She... she isn't investigating us at all?
Marcus: Victoria settled the estate years ago! She moved to Florida! She hasn't cared about our family trust since the probate court closed the file!
Elena: Then... then who sent these letters? Who has been taking money from my private bank account every month?!
Marcus: What private bank account? What money are you talking about?!
Elena: Every month for the last four years, I’ve been transferring five thousand dollars from my personal savings into an anonymous offshore account... because someone sent me letters threatening to expose Maya to the authorities!
Marcus: You were being extorted... and you didn't tell your husband, who happens to be a senior corporate litigation attorney?!
Elena: I was terrified, Marcus! I thought it was Victoria using a front company! I thought if I stopped paying, they would take Maya and put me in prison!
Marcus: Give me those wire transfer receipts right now. We are going to find out who has been bleeding our family dry while my daughter was locked behind a wall.
Marcus grabbed the stack of bank statements from the desk. He sat down under the harsh fluorescent light of the basement, his legal mind turning over every detail. As he examined the account routing numbers and the correspondence addresses, a terrifyingly familiar pattern began to emerge in the ink. The routing number belonged to a local branch in downtown Dallas—a branch where his own brother, Julian, worked as a senior financial advisor.
