Daniel: What in God's name is happening here?
Evelyn: Step away from the wall, Daniel! You don't know what you're doing!
Daniel: Stay back, Evelyn! Don't come any closer to my daughter or me!
Daniel swung the steel hammer with violent precision, shattering large chunks of drywall onto the hardwood floor. White plaster dust filled the hallway air, making Lily cough as she backed up against the front door. With every blow, the hidden space revealed itself—a small, windowless room constructed entirely within the double-thick frame of the suburban house.
Lily: Daddy, look! The blanket!
Daniel: Jesus Christ... there's a person in there!
Inside the tiny enclosure, curled on a thin mattress laid upon the cold subfloor, was a gaunt woman clutching a dirty fleece blanket around her shoulders. Her face was sunken, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror as the bright hall lights flooded her makeshift prison. Daniel reached his arm through the jagged gap, desperate to offer a lifeline.
Daniel: Hold on! I'm going to pull you out! Give me your hand!
Woman: Don't let her... don't let her touch me...
Evelyn: You idiot! You've ruined everything!
Evelyn rushed forward, her fingernails clawing at Daniel's shoulder to pull him away from the wall, but Daniel spun around and shoved her back against the foyer table, sending a glass vase shattering onto the floor.
Daniel: Touch me again and I swear to God I'll knock you out! Who is this woman, Evelyn?
Evelyn: She's a trespasser! A crazy woman who broke into the basement weeks ago!
Woman: She's lying... Daniel, look at me...
Daniel froze as the frail woman slowly stood up, stepping over the debris of drywall and wooden studs. She reached out with a trembling hand, her voice cracking with exhaustion and emotion. The light hit her face fully for the first time, exposing a familiar birthmark right above her left cheekbone.
Daniel: Sarah? No... no, that's impossible. Sarah died three years ago in the hospital!
Sarah: I didn't die, Daniel... she paid them off... she took my life from me...
Lily: Mommy?
Daniel: My wife... her death certificate was signed by the state coroner! I buried her!
Evelyn: She's an impostor! A scam artist trying to steal our family estate and money!
Sarah: Check my arm, Daniel... check the scar from our wedding day when the champagne glass broke!
Daniel dropped the hammer, his hands shaking violently as he stepped toward the weak woman. He gently grabbed her left forearm and pulled back the ragged sleeve. There, running four inches along her wrist, was the distinct crescent-shaped scar from their wedding night five years ago.
Daniel: It's really you... Oh God, Sarah, it's really you!
Evelyn: You were supposed to stay buried! You ruined my life!
Daniel: You locked my wife in a wall?! Are you insane?!
Sarah: She took my trust fund... she took my name... she took everything...
Daniel: I'm calling the police right now!
Evelyn suddenly bolted toward the front door, her heels clicking frantically against the hardwood, but Daniel tackled her to the rug before she could touch the brass doorknob.
