Marcus pulled his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, into his arms as she trembled violently. Her tiny hands pointed toward the back corner of their suburban Dallas home, where the massive dark oak armoire sat against the wall.
Lily: "DADDY! IT'S BEHIND THERE!"
Marcus held her tight, feeling the rapid beat of her heart against his chest. Standing a few feet behind them, his wife, Sarah, adjusted the collar of her maroon satin blouse, her face pale as snow.
Sarah: "Marcus, don't listen to her. She's just having another nightmare. It's nothing."
Marcus: "Sarah, look at her. She's terrified. She doesn't scream like this over bad dreams."
Lily: "It made a noise, Daddy! Something hit the wood from inside!"
Marcus set Lily down gently behind him. He stepped toward the heavy armoire, placing both hands against its solid sides. With a heavy grunt, he shoved the piece of furniture two feet to the left, the wood scraping loudly against the carpeted floor.
The moment the space behind the cabinet was revealed, Sarah let out a sharp gasp. Spreading across the pristine beige drywall were large, dark spiderweb cracks, as if something heavy had been repeatedly battered against the inside of the wall from a hidden space.
Marcus: "What in the world... Sarah, did you know about this crack?"
Sarah: "No! Of course not! We... we need to call a contractor tomorrow. Don't touch it!"
Marcus ignored her warning and grabbed a heavy steel sledgehammer from the garage corner. He raised it high above his shoulder, his knuckles turning white as he braced himself to uncover the terrible truth behind his family's home.
