Sarah: Mark, call 911 right now! This isn't just about a trespassing child—something terrible happened down there!
Mark: Stay back, Sarah. Take Maya and Liam into the living room and lock the front door.
Liam: Dad, don't leave Lily alone! The mean men in suits came back yesterday looking for the paper!
Mark: What men in suits, Liam? Speak clearly right now!
Liam: Two guys in dark coats came to the back patio yesterday. They were digging around the foundation near the air vents!
Sarah: Oh Lord... Mark, the trust fund lawyers who handled the auction... they were searching for something before we moved in!
Mark reached into the dark closet, gently extending his hand toward the shivering seven-year-old girl.
Mark: Lily, I'm not going to hurt you. I'm a veteran, okay? I protect people. Can you step out here so I can look at that picture?
Lily hesitated, looking into Mark's eyes before slowly crawling forward out of the cramped closet space.
Lily: You have the same ring as the man in the picture...
Mark looked down at his own hand. On his ring finger sat his West Point military academy graduation ring. He leaned closer to the framed photograph Lily was holding. The picture showed a young man in full military uniform standing beside David Vance, wearing the exact same academy ring.
Mark: That's Captain Thomas Vance... he was missing in action in Iraq ten years ago. We were in the same unit!
Sarah: What?! Thomas Vance was David Vance's only son! Everyone assumed he died overseas!
Mark: He didn't die overseas... Thomas was my best friend in the service. He gave me this ring before his final patrol!
Lily: My daddy gave mommy a big blue envelope before he went away to the war. She hid it under the basement floor!
Mark: A blue envelope... That's a Department of Defense military trust fund document!
Sarah: Mark, if Thomas Vance created a military trust fund for his daughter, this house never belonged to the bank! The foreclosure was illegal!
Mark: It's worse than that, Sarah. If the bank foreclosed illegally, someone deliberately hid Thomas's death certificate to steal his multi-million dollar estate!
Suddenly, the sharp sound of heavy footsteps crunched against the gravel walkway right outside the hallway window.
