An hour later, the quiet Dallas street was filled with flashing police cruisers and local news vans. Inside the warm, brightly lit kitchen, Sarah sat at the granite island, wrapping a soft cotton blanket around little Lily’s shoulders while giving her a warm cup of cocoa.
Sarah: Here you go, sweetie. You never have to hide in that dark closet ever again.
Lily: Is... is the bad lawyer gone for good?
Mark: He's going to prison for a very long time, Lily. He can never hurt you or take your family's home away again.
Liam: See, Lily? I told you my dad was a hero!
Maya: Can Lily stay in my room, Mom? We have bunk beds and plenty of extra pillows!
Sarah looked over at Mark, her eyes filled with gentle warmth and deep emotion as she reached out to hold his hand.
Sarah: Mark... what happens to the house now? Legally, it belongs to Lily's trust fund.
Mark: I spoke to the probate detective outside. Since Thomas was my brother-in-arms, I'm applying to become Lily's legal guardian through the court system.
Lily: Does that mean... I get to have a real family again?
Mark: It means you'll always have a home, Lily. We're going to keep this house together, just like your father wanted.
Sarah: We're not going anywhere, sweetheart. You're a part of our family now.
Lily looked down at the silver framed family photograph resting on the table beside her cocoa. She reached out her small hand, tracing her finger over her father's face in the military uniform before looking up at Mark with a bright, tearful smile.
Lily: Thank you, Daddy's friend. I knew he sent you to find me.
Mark wiped a stray tear from his cheek, pulling his wife and children close as the morning sun began to filter softly through the kitchen windows, washing away the dark shadows of the past forever.
