Mark: Get down! Everyone get away from the windows now!
Sarah: Mark, who is that outside?!
Mark: I don't know, but they aren't the police. Sarah, take the kids into the master bedroom and lock the deadbolt!
Liam: Dad! They have flashlights near the side basement hatch!
Mark sprinted down the hall toward his gun safe, his heart hammering against his ribs as he punched in the combination code.
Mark: I'm grabbing my licensed firearm. Nobody opens any door in this house unless it's me!
Sarah: Please be careful, Mark! If these people hurt Thomas's daughter, we'll never forgive ourselves!
Mark racked the slide of his pistol, keeping his tactical flashlight low as he crept back toward the hallway closet where Lily had been hiding.
Mark: Lily, show me where the hatch to the crawlspace is. Right now.
Lily: It's under the lower shelf... behind the wooden panel with the star painted on it.
Mark reached into the tight space, sliding his hand along the floorboards until his fingers caught the edge of a hidden brass latch. With a heavy tug, a section of the wall swung open, revealing a narrow set of wooden stairs leading down into pitch darkness.
Mark: Stay behind me, Lily. Don't make a sound.
He descended the narrow steps into the cool, damp subterranean air beneath the foundation of the house. The beam of his flashlight cut through decades of dust, landing directly on a heavy metal safe bolted into the concrete floor. The safe door was already hanging slightly open, its lock forced with heavy tools.
Man's Voice: Search the back corner! The old man said the original will was hidden inside the master deed box!
Second Voice: Hurry up! The family that bought the house at auction might hear us!
Mark stepped around the concrete pillar, raising his flashlight and weapon in a firm, tactical stance.
Mark: Freeze! Police are on their way! Don't move a single inch!
The two men in dark suits spun around, their faces illuminated by Mark's flashlight beam. One of them held a heavy iron crowbar, while the other clutched a thick, faded leather briefcase.
Lawyer: Lower your weapon, Mr. Miller! You're interfering with official estate business!
Mark: Estate business? You broke into my house in the middle of the night, Mr. Henderson! I know who you are—you were David Vance's lead corporate attorney!
Henderson: You don't understand what you're dealing with, Miller. This property is worth twelve million dollars. Step aside and let us take the documents, or your family will suffer the consequences!
