The hardwood floor felt cold beneath Sarah’s knees as she clutched three-week-old Maya tightly against her chest. The infant’s sharp, frantic cries echoed off the cream-colored walls of the quiet suburban living room, piercing through the sudden chaos that had exploded inside her home.
Sarah: Maya, it's okay, mommy's here... shh, baby, mommy's got you.
Mark: What the hell just happened?! Sarah, are you alright?!
Brenda: Get away from her! Mark, keep that insane girl away from your wife!
Sarah looked up, her vision blurred by fresh tears, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. Standing near the front foyer was Brenda—Mark’s mother—dressed in her elegant emerald green dress, her voice trembling with an theatrical mix of horror and outrage.
Brenda: Mark, you need to call the police right now! She almost killed your baby!
Sarah: That's... that's not what happened! Mark, listen to me!
Mark: Brenda, back up! Everyone just quiet down for a second! Sarah, tell me what happened!
Brenda: What happened is that ungrateful brat Chloe pushed the stroller right toward the top of the basement stairs! I saw it with my own eyes, Mark! I jumped in front of it just in time to catch it!
Sarah’s ten-year-old stepdaughter, Chloe, stood by the edge of the hallway, her face pale, holding her father’s old smartphone tight in her trembling hands.
Chloe: Dad... don't listen to her. She's lying.
Brenda: How dare you call me a liar, you disrespectful little delinquent! Mark, your daughter is dangerous!
Mark: Brenda, stop shouting at my daughter! Chloe, step back!
Sarah: Mark, please... my hands are shaking so badly. Just listen to Chloe.
Chloe: Dad! Just look at this screen right now!
