Thomas Miller burst through the sliding doors of the emergency room. His face was pale with sheer panic and overwhelming grief. He grabbed the nearest triage nurse by her arms tightly.
Thomas: Where is my daughter, Maya Miller?
Nurse: Sir, you need to calm down right now.
Thomas: She was hit by a car on Oak Street!
Nurse: They just took her into trauma room two.
Thomas collapsed into a plastic waiting room chair and sobbed. Liam's mother, Sarah, rushed into the hospital lobby right after. Her eyes were red from crying during the drive over.
Sarah: Thomas! How are our sweet children doing?
Thomas: The doctors are operating on both of them.
Sarah: This cannot be happening to our dear families!
Thomas: They were just skipping together down the road.
Hours passed like agonizing days inside the cold sterile hallway. The bright fluorescent lights hummed loudly above their weary heads. A senior surgeon in blue scrubs finally walked toward them.
Doctor Vance: Are you the parents of Maya and Liam?
Thomas: Yes! Please tell us they are alive!
Doctor Vance: They survived the initial impact, thank God.
Sarah: Oh, thank the Lord above!
Doctor Vance: But both suffered severe internal physical trauma.
Thomas grabbed Sarah's trembling hand to offer brief comfort. Doctor Vance held a clipboard tight against his blue coat. His expression remained grim despite the small bit of hope.
Thomas: Can we see our children right now?
Doctor Vance: Liam is awake in the intensive care unit.
Sarah: What about sweet Maya? Is she okay?
Doctor Vance: Maya is currently in a deep coma state.
Thomas gasped as tears welled up in his eyes. Sarah wrapped her arms around the broken father instantly. Doctor Vance guided them down the quiet white hospital corridor.
Doctor Vance: Liam has been asking for Maya repeatedly.
Sarah: He loves her more than his own life.
Doctor Vance: His condition is stable, but he needs rest.
They entered Liam's room filled with beeping heart monitors. Liam lay in the high hospital bed with heavy bandages. His eyes opened slowly as his mother approached his side.
Liam: Mom... where is my sweet Maya?
Sarah: She is being cared for by doctors, honey.
Liam: Thomas... I am so sorry I failed...
Thomas: You didn't fail anyone, my dear boy.
Liam: I tried to push her out of the way.
Thomas: You did everything a brave man could do.
Liam reached toward his bedside table with a weak hand. The small velvet box sat beside his heart monitoring machine. He picked it up with shaking, pale fingers slowly.
Liam: I was going to ask her tonight, Thomas.
Thomas: I know, son. Her mother told me everything.
Liam: Take me to her room right now, please.
Doctor Vance: Liam, you are too weak to move.
Liam: I don't care! I need to see her!
