The Peaceful Summer Afternoon

The SUV Hit Them Both Before They Could Ever Marry

The bright summer sun shone down warmly on Oak Street. Green lawns stretched out neatly beside spotless white picket fences. Hardwood trees created soft shade over the quiet suburban neighborhood roads.

Liam adjusted his plain white shirt and smiled at Maya. She wore a light blue dress that caught the soft breeze. Her blonde hair bounced gently as she skipped along beside him.

Liam: Are you ready for our big announcement tonight?

Maya: My parents are going to be so surprised!

Liam: Your dad might actually give me his blessing.

Maya: He already loves you like a real son.

They had been sweethearts since their early high school days. Everyone in town knew they were destined to stay together forever. Liam pulled a tiny velvet box slightly out of his pocket.

Liam: I bought the engagement ring yesterday morning.

Maya: You didn't show my mother, did you?

Liam: She helped me pick out the shiny diamond!

Maya gasped in sheer delight and bumped his shoulder playfully. They held hands tightly as they stepped off the concrete curb. The empty street lay wide and quiet under the bright afternoon sun.

Maya: We should plan a destination wedding by the beach.

Liam: Whatever you want, my sweet girl.

Maya: Promise me we will always be this happy?

Liam: I promise you with all of my heart.

They laughed together while skipping across the black asphalt road. Neither of them noticed the heavy vehicle turning the distant corner. The dark grey SUV accelerated rapidly down the residential street.

Maya: Do you hear that loud noise coming closer?

Liam: It sounds like a speeding car motor.

Liam turned his head quickly to check the open road. His eyes widened in absolute shock as metal came rushing forward. The driver inside seemed completely distracted by a dropped phone.

Liam: Maya, get out of the street!

Maya: Liam, it is moving way too fast!

Liam tried to shove Maya toward the green grass lawn. But the massive front bumper struck them both almost instantly. The sickening thud echoed loudly through the entire peaceful neighborhood.

Maya: Liam!

Their bodies hit the hard road with incredible physical force. Screeching rubber tires left thick black marks on the street. The heavy SUV ground to a sudden halt just inches away.

Liam: Maya... can you hear my voice?

Maya: It hurts... everything hurts so much.

Liam reached across the cold asphalt to grasp her fingers. Their fingers intertwined tightly as dark pool shadows began spreading out. Sunlight continued to shine brightly on their motionless prone bodies.

Liam: Keep holding my hand, sweet girl.

Maya: I am so cold right now...

Liam: Help is coming for us real soon.

Neighbors began running out from their spacious front porches nearby. Screams filled the peaceful suburban air as panic spread fast. Liam squeezed Maya's trembling hand one last time before drifting.
